Our team had a librarian help us make a list of who would make us pay vs not--has narrowed down where we can pub but also ID'd some journals we had pub agreements with. We've also toyed with boycotting reviewing at journals who make us pay open access fees but haven't detonated that option yet

Respectfully, the gov is mistaken. Nobody is suggesting we eliminate addiction from our lexicon. Sub use disorder is a clinical diagnosis. Addiction is a conversational term that lacks the specificity to be useful clinically. They’re just different. The terms to get rid of are abuse, dirty/clean.

It seems important to scale up more interventions for these youth, given that they have the power to divert youth out of the system and towards needed resources

Kaitlin Sheerin, Ph.D. @kaitlinsheerin.bsky.social · 10/06/2025
The focus of those trials? Primarily conduct problems and substance use Few, if any, RCTs published results on other common concerns for youth involved in the juvenile legal system, including PTSD and suicidal thoughts and behaviors
100
Kaitlin Sheerin, Ph.D. @kaitlinsheerin.bsky.social · 10/06/2025
Some takeaways: In spite of a greater desire from policymakers and researchers to focus on the behavioral health needs of these youth, only 38 RCTs were published on in a 33.5 year period

Youth on probation with both mental health & substance use issues are 3.5x more likely to reoffend. Treatment helps—but one size doesn’t fit all. Tailored, integrated care is key. New findings from JJ-TRIALS: www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....
An excerpt from the article "The impact of mental health and substance use issues on recidivism among youth on probation" by Jennifer N. Stanley, Sarah C. DeLucca, Steven Belenko, and Angela Robertson: "Justice-involved youth with co-occurring issues are at a disadvantage in accessing evidence-based, integrative treatment that addresses [their] needs, which can lead to poor treatment and justice-related outcomes."

Interestingly, experiences of discrimination, rather than trauma, were associated with symptoms of depression, anxiety, and PTSD We should do better to address the BH needs of these caregivers & can do so by focusing on discrimination--especially preventing further discrimination within the system

When I was in grad school, a family I was working with knitted a scarf for me. To this day, it remains one of my most treasured possessions. Whenever I feel like I'm not making a difference, it's a visible reminder that to some people, even on a very small scale, I've made a very big difference. ♥️
