(IIRC they were actually better track cars than the saloon on account of the longer wheelbase giving a little more stability in high speed corners)

I can't remember which movie it was where someone said "Yo gonna burn in hell for that one" & it really stuck in my mind for at least 40 years (none of the readily searchable gifs look right) but... as well as reminding me of that, you also owe me a new keyboard.

A mate at uni had one. We tried to use it to jump start my 205 diesel, only the battery was under one of the seats, and the crocodile clip slipped over and spot welded itself to the seat rail... (It was nevertheless cool. It was called Custard, on account of its colour)

I'd imagine so - although it strikes me that post incident an audio recording might be v handy if eg driver who just engaged reverse at the lights walks up to window & apologises.

She's keen to have one; her main concern I think is the risk of audio footage picking up her & her best friend singing in the car...

Will probably need to discuss that with daughter who's also using the car - it's primarily so if she's involved in anything on the motorway we can establish exactly what happened rather than default to blaming the younger driver. (She's a teenager so she's not up yet...)

It wouldn’t be a dealbreaker and the ability to take it out might be more attractive - pessimist in me wonders if thinking they might be recorded could encourage parking dings to then try to remove/disable the camera meaning more likely unrecoverable costs…

Was looking at that, but also option of detachable main unit (so it can be removed by us rather than someone else…) which would presumably not be compatible with monitoring the car while parked.

I was planning to use manufacturer kit to set up a feed off car electrics so long term battery health hopefully less of an issue, but noted. A chunk of the driving will be after dark (coming home from gigs/rehearsals, so mid to late evening all year)

Anyone got recommendations for a good dashcam - ideally front and rear, in an estate car?

I'm resigned to UK Cardle being a bit odd about which combination of make/model it recognises as a valid answer (frequently rejects the full name, as it appears in the answer, in favour of manufacturer only). But I'm pretty certain this isn't a combination I'd ever have come up with for that car...
The UK "Guess the car" game, announcing failure with the words "Unlucky - the answer is Alfa Romeo 4C". The image below is of a boxy white Japanese hatchback with bodykit and turbo badges; definitely not the famously curvy Alfa Romeo 4C.

(That's when I'm navigating from the passenger seat; otherwise it's planning ahead. Have tried to explain to the offspring how the UK's Primary Route signage works for when you're driving solo; it works really well once you understand it)

Once crossed 3 countries on a single Post It note stuck to the steering wheel boss (joys of UNECE E-route numbering). I do use sat-nav for live traffic monitoring, but have a Philips Navigator for emergencies, and prefer OS maps as the contours & features make things so much easier...

Let's talk eels & colonization! In the early 17th C. London was growing fast and needed more eels. The surrounding countryside couldn't provide enough. The Dutch importers could...but the English were nervous of the strong Dutch monopoly. So where did they look? Ireland. 1/5 🗃️🧪
Meme. Photograph of a Monopoly board game in Dutch. You're looking at the starting corner, seeing 2 squares in either direction. The directions on the square read:

Ontvang
Bij het passeren
f2000. - salaris
START

So now you know the (or at least a) Dutch word for start.

The game board is sitting on what is probably a table made of a light wood or wood substitute. You can see the grain running left to right, or right to left. Or perhaps east to west. It's hard to tell with grain. The board itself is edged in red, but fear not. It's only red paint, not blood. A blood-edged board would be a far darker shade of red. And a far darker game, over all.

Meme text reads:
"Who wouldn't be
Nervous?"

For those in England & Wales who don’t get them on the NHS: private flu & covid jabs are available from today. I’ve just had both at my local pharmacy. £115 for the pair. Yes, that’s expensive, but if you’re a freelancer & don’t get sick pay it’s probably a lot cheaper than taking time off.

Loved the old, heavy, trains. I’m sure the newer, lighter stock is more energy efficient to move but as a passenger the smooth as silk ride with a decent sized tray table was infinitely preferable to the “jet plane in take off mode” experience all the way across northern France.

Knew someone who got a 1928 Bentley 100’ further off the end of the forestry track then a modern 4x4 could manage. We know it was 100’ because the tow line only just reached. And they needed a second 4x4 to get enough traction to pull them all out.

It doesn't seem too fussed if you leave that switched off (we too bought a 'basic' HiSense recently) though it does make Gus Hedges *very* orange. It was also the only option for old (composite video) DVD players and nothing in budget had component video inputs - though HDMI DVD players are only £25

Slight tweak; it was originally all the 40 yr cohort, but they cut that off on Jan 1 2021 so it's only vehicles up to 1980 (so the Saab still just qualifies, but would have been delivered with black/white & black/yellow - which is what I'd have stuck with too)

Ugh - sounds grim. Glad you're home safe and sound now. (Once had an issue with the DB4 which almost certainly was repairable but the mechanic was so terrified of making things worse he called out a trailer anyway. To take us from Devon back to Surrey. Didn't mid that wait, was at a very nice hotel)

Ships can move a ton of freight a mile on the energy contained in a single sheet of writing paper. Oh wait, that was Victorian triple expansion steam engines. Modern ships are so many orders of magnitude more efficient than that...

R18 has managed to secure a place helping out on a local archaeological dig (Roman villa) - she's been asked to bring a trowel if she's got one and I'm hoping I know someone who could advise if either of these would do? Both blades 13cm long, pointy one 6cm wide, rounded one 7cm wide.
A pair of diamond shaped pointing trowels, both around 25cm long in total. the narrower one comes to quite a sharp point, whereas the slightly broader one has a smoothly rounded tip.
