Canada's New Pipeline, Explained
Looking for news on the new pipeline? Prime Minister Mark Carney has listed the West Coast Oil Pipeline, now called Pacific Link, as a project of national interest. Here is what the announcement says, what it doesn't, and what happens next.
In this video, I read the actual announcement so you don't have to rely on headlines or hot takes. Topics covered:
— What the Pacific Link pipeline is and why the West Coast Oil Pipeline was renamed
— What a "project of national interest" means under the Building Canada Act
— How the Major Projects Office and the Canada Energy Regulator fit into the review
— Who will own Pacific Link: the federal government, Alberta, Pembina Pipeline Corporation, and a minimum 10% offered to Indigenous communities
— Why Trans Mountain Corporation is leading the project
— Whether the pipeline route has been finalized (it hasn't)
— How an extra one million barrels a day would change Canadian oil exports to Asia
— Why the national-interest designation does not mean construction starts tomorrow
