You know, it's really an indictment of most Canadian cities that Danielle Smith is forcing Edmonton to adopt the terrible housing policies that those cities freely choose for themselves.

That’s awesome! Makes sense, though—it was one of the only places on the peninsula doing them today, and I know we are both keeners. 😉

I’m just saying that those ideological things are huge, huge differences, and they’re grounded in institutions rather than local cultures. There’s no avoiding them. It’s why I’m in favour of individual US immigrants coming here but shudder at Canada taking on any US jurisdiction as gained land.

I think there are a WHOLE lot more MAGA true believers in Maine. And a whole lot more US-exceptionalism-ideologues too.

This is a really interesting article! My only question: the part of my childhood that I spent in the US was spent in Michigan, which is apple country, and the local apple I remember everyone enjoying was Macintosh. Surprised that didn’t get a mention as one of the good-tasting older apples.

So this John Snow local guy who has been desperately trying to become some kind of influencer seemed like a serious red flag to me from the very first time he shared one of his videos in this fb group. But now he’s partnering up with Freek Shep for videos. Halifax has a fascism problem.

“Freek Schep and I went to visit the Downtown Encampment to drop off some fire extinguishers, banana bread and a portable toilet plus other items like blankets and things.

There’s a video where they film people who are living in an encampment. I have no idea of they got consent to post, but I made sure the screenshot I took doesn’t show anyone anyway, just a sleeping bag.

My experience here is that there are days when you can use an umbrella just fine, and other days when you can’t at all, but you often don’t know the difference without taking that risk!

My office is in the upper loft space of our very tall and pencil-thin house, and if I leave the window that faces the harbour open, I can hear all the announcements from the cruise ships as they tell their passengers where to be and when. It always gives me a "what even is this life?" moment.

Ridiculous! That’s a policy that’s ripe for change.

I mean, if you have to steal one of them, can I instead recommend Edmonton’s Andrew Knack, who is himself a bike commuter (he bought an e-Brompton after borrowing mine to try it out!)? But Farkas is okay, I guess. 😉

Not making an excuse for the policy, of course! Just trying to puzzle out the reasoning behind it. The sensible way of dealing with it would be to turn a blind eye towards individual tourists bringing small purchases back, though, and target stores importing.

I think the US was trying to duplicate certain Canadian provinces with provincial liquor stores officially removing US alcohol from stores, with the methods at their disposal. They have privatized sales, so the only way to approximate that was to go even more heavy-handed and make it fully illegal.

Idealistic Pragmatist @justip.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
I think this means that when we take her to the Valley next week, she won’t be allowed to take home a bottle of the Nova Scotia wine she’ll have just tasted. This makes me so angry!

Warning: Canadians Could Have Booze Seized at US Border
Might be best to leave the Canadian Club at home. New alcohol bans at the US border mean officials could confiscate Canadian-made booze if travellers try to bring it across.

Those places are terrible, and in Canada they have mostly realized this and are looking for ways to move downtown.

Also? I bet if Sue Uteck did a poll about how many of the customers in her business area were more like me or more like her imagined Haligonian, she’d find out that they’re overwhelmingly more like me, given where they’re located.
090
Idealistic Pragmatist @justip.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
I’m a Haligonian too and I don’t want to drive a car to businesses at all. I want to walk, or ride a bike, or to take transit if it’s too far. And that doesn’t make me less Haligonian.
