Successful nudges as indicators of needed structural change, instead of as the end themselves, makes sense! Ultimately, the improvements must come through upstream changes and stronger state capacity, which this project (after a lot of hiccups) demonstrated can work.

Insurance isn’t the only way to smooth shocks, credit matters too. My new paper with Jaffe and Malani models insurance and borrowing jointly, showing they are substitutes: access to loans sharply reduces insurance value, cutting it in half for typical households. julianreif.com/research/rei...

🚨 Rethinking Moral Hazard: Moral hazard in health insurance—the increased spending that comes when you get insured—is usually seen as wasteful due to insurance’s price distortion. This paper challenges that view.

Vanguard just announced a $100 account closure fee... for people who already hold accounts. Is this legal? What if they announced a $1 million account closure fee? Hard to have competition on fees if you can ex post assess new fees on customers for leaving!
