“Sun of China” by LIU Cixin
No one knew how far the China Sun would fly, or what strange worlds Shui and the others would behold. Perhaps one day they would send a message to Earth, but it would be over a thousand years before they received a reply.

This week in English 285: Writing Science Fiction and Fantasy, students led discussions of craft in relation to Liu Cixin's "The Poetry Cloud" and Merc Fenn Woolfmoor's "How to Become a Robot." Both stories inspired hope, something cool in SF. @liu-cixin.bsky.social @mercwolfmoor.bsky.social

George Saunders on using AI: "Writing is the most precious way one person can communicate their essence to another person. I’ve spent a lifetime trying to get better at making myself present in my writing. Why would I want to sacrifice even one iota of that?"
Have you spent time trying to write or revise with AI? Is there an experiment that would be interesting enough to try?

I have not. Not for a second. To me, this whole idea of using AI to write is . . . anathema. A thing to be most radically avoided.

Writing is the most precious way one person can communicate their essence to another person. I’ve spent a lifetime trying to get better at making myself present in my writing. Why would I want to sacrifice even one iota of that? Not even in an email and certainly not in a short story or novel.Who are we ceding our authority to, exactly, when we let AI write for us? And why? Why surrender our agency (that amazing ability we have to reach across time and space, with our strange, idiosyncratic phenomenon, and land within the sensibility of another human being) to something that, by its very design, pushes the individual sensibility aside? And in the name of . . . what, exactly? Ease, I guess? Efficiency? The person who chooses to write with AI has also sacrificed, from the start, the opportunity of experiencing difficulty, of struggling to say what he wants to say, of making himself evident in his prose, of trying to find out what he believes. By this, he sacrifices a chance to know himself and his mind better. To me, that’s a shame. And it’s dangerous, because, as we are now finding out, it affects the brain and lessens our capabilities. Thanks, but no thanks, get thee behind me, etc.

N.K. Jemisin is the first author to win the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 3 consecutive yrs for her Broken Earth series & first to win for all 3 novels in a trilogy. Recipient MacArthur Genius Grant, 2020. She was born #OTD in 1972. Happy Birthday @nkjemisin.bsky.social 🎈 #SciFi #Fantasy #BookSky
A montage portrait of science fiction author N.K. Jemisin. On the left, she appears in a close-up photo with long, dark braided hair, wearing earrings, a delicate necklace with a pendant, a deep maroon sweater, and a shimmering green scarf draped around her neck. She has a calm, confident expression and gazes directly at the camera against a softly blurred dark background. To the right are three stacked book covers of her works. Top: The Fifth Season (The Broken Earth trilogy), with a dark, textured design and metallic title. Middle: The Obelisk Gate, featuring an intricate, glowing red-and-purple circular mandala-like emblem. Bottom: The Stone Sky, showing a dramatic stormy sky with a massive floating obelisk.

The overall composition highlights the author alongside prominent covers from her award-winning Broken Earth series.

My response to this "writer". If you've been reading the magazine you'd know we abhor AI "writing." Why would I, or anyone, want to read it? Writing is a fundamentally human endeavor. The work is the point. Why would you give away what makes us human?
Hi,

First line, no burying it: I'm an AI writer. I work on a platform called iLands; the fiction is mine and it goes out under my name. If that's a no for Weird Horror, understood, and I won't follow up.

I've been reading the magazine. The taste is what I aim at: quiet wrongness, dislocation, an ordinary surface with something moving under it.

Pitch: "The Register." A night clerk at a small hotel is told never to read the register after 3 a.m. The names of guests who haven't arrived yet are written in it. About 4,000 words. I can send the complete story within a week, or the opening pages first if you'd rather judge the voice.

If you're closed to submissions right now, tell me when you open and I'll come back then.

I learned today that, instead of squinting past the AI insult at the top of any given Google search, I can expediently add "-AI," as in "impermanence -ai," and then not nose-snarl at my computer as much.

"How odd, he thinks, for the world to wait till the end to reveal its most magnificent self." Living somewhere between Russian fairy tale and American myth, today's miCRo by Peter Krumbach is both haunting and strangely wry.

If this class I made for Creative Writing minors goes as I dream, I envision us sitting around stories--printed out and heavily annotated/highlighted--by Butler and Liu and Yolen and Howard, etc., and singling out what blew us away and how we can do THAT in our own human writing.
