Show me a photo on your phone that isn’t you but has your energy
A small calico cat lies on a fluffy blue blanket. The cat is curled into a circle, with its hind legs extending just past where its face would be—except that same face is instead tucked a little further in and is covered by one of the front legs.

Mostly stuffed toys, like these two. (Have managed to complete just two blankets in my crochet career, which at this point is old enough to vote but not yet drink.)
A crocheted stuffed horse toy with a fuzzy mane.An infant reclines in a bouncer while holding a rattle in one hand and a crocheted stuffed Mario 1-up mushroom in the other. The child has brought the mushroom to their mouth.

The lower-court precedent the government wants to overturn: storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us... The #SCOTUS case: www.scotusblog.com/cases/case-f... US Concealed Carry Association guidance on cannabis use: www.usconcealedcarry.com/blog/marijua... (4/4)
Excerpt from Fifth Circuit's 2024 decision in U.S. v. Connelly (case 23-50312), which is the first linked document in this post. Relevant portion underlined: “our history and tradition may support some limits on a presently intoxicated person’s right to carry a weapon … but they do not support disarming a sober person based solely on past substance usage.”

The statute prohibiting "an unlawful user of … any controlled substance" from owning guns is 18 USC 922(g)(3): uscode.house.gov/view.xhtml?r... The regulation that says it counts if use occurred "within the past year": www.ecfr.gov/current/titl... (3/4)
The definition of “Unlawful user of or addicted to any controlled substance” from 27 CFR 478.11, which is the second document linked in this post. The three occurrences of “within the past year” are underlined within this sentence: “An inference of current use may be drawn from evidence of a recent use or possession of a controlled substance or a pattern of use or possession that reasonably covers the present time, e.g., a conviction for use or possession of a controlled substance within the past year; multiple arrests for such offenses within the past 5 years if the most recent arrest occurred within the past year; or persons found through a drug test to use a controlled substance unlawfully, provided that the test was administered within the past year.”

Great placement for @karenhao.bsky.social’s book by the window of this island bookstore in Friday Harbor, Washington. Literally between Silver, Kurzweil and other rah-rah hype types, Karen and @emilymbender.bsky.social/@alexhanna.bsky.social hold down the fort with the voices of caution and reason.
A display of hardcover books on a bookstore table. A typewriter and postcards sit behind them, along with some other books. Of note, the one that's on a stand facing the viewer is “Empire of AI: Dreams and Nightmares in Sam Altman’s OpenAI” by Karen Hao. (A few items over sits Nate Silver’s book “On the Edge: The Art of Risking Everything”.)Another view of the same display, with Hao’s “Empire of AI” in the fourth-round. A little farther back is a small collection of books, including Ray Kurzweil’s “The Singularity is Nearer” but also including “The AI Con: How to Fight Big Tech’s Hype and Create the Future We Want” by Emily M. Bender and Alex Hanna.

True all around. That said, that restriction only applies to people who are citizens of somewhere _else_. www.canada.ca/en/immigrati...
Excerpt of text from linked page. Subheading reads, “Article 2”, and the text beneath reads, “This Agreement does not apply to refugee status claimants who are citizens of Canada or the United States or who, not having a country of nationality, are habitual residents of Canada or the United States.”

I miss him so much.
A baby stands on a windowsill while being supported by a parent’s arm. The two of them are silhouetted with part of the Chicago skyline visible behind them through the window.

we cooked together,
A parent stands in a kitchen and looks down at something out of frame. In a soft, structured baby carrier on their chest is a baby with an enormous, open-mouthed grin.

We read together,
Baby Clark sits up in a hospital bed. He’s looking at a book, “Sleepy Toes”, that one of his parents is holding and reading to him.

Even though he was born on the last day of winter, he got an early chance to see snowfall before the weather really started to warm up for the year.
A baby is asleep in a fuzzy, hooded snowsuit covered in images of owls. One of his parents is holding him outside and laughing in a snowy park.

(Sometimes he’d simply try to eat the grownups.)
Baby Clark has his mouth latched onto the chin of one of his parents, as if trying to drink from it. The parent is looking up (so their chin is facing forward) and smiling nervously. The baby, meanwhile, has a look of resigned confusion while his arms hang at his sides.

He routinely wanted to try grownups’ food, even to the point of trying to snatch it out of their mouths.

But I want to tell you about the strongest and most determined person I’ve known. Clark always was more interested in standing than crawling, partly because of the way his cancer affected the use of his right arm.
A baby stands in front of a parent’s legs. He is waving a gift bag in his left hand, and his right arm is held up a little awkwardly for balance. He has a determined smile, and his outfit looks like a holiday sweater but with silhouettes of dinosaurs on it.

Six years ago tonight, I met the most wonderful baby boy.
Two parents gaze lovingly at a newborn baby whom one of them is holding. One parent is wearing a purple top and has long, brown hair. The other parent, who is holding the baby, has glasses and short, dark hair, plus a white T-shirt with green text that reads, “Welcome! Everything is fine.”

Nonprofit community journalism needs all of us—whether we’re doing the work, spreading the word, contributing financially, or finding out more about our neighbors and institutions. #MugsUpForPublicMedia

Long room is long—and filling up!—to hear @simonwillison.net weigh in on the state of the art of LLMs and what actually might be reasonable uses of them. Lots of interest at #NICAR25, and good to have someone like Simon to help cut through the hype.
A deep conference room with nine rows of tables for attendees—and all of the seats are claimed. The projection screen in the front of the room shows the session title, “What’s new in the world of LLMs”, and the speaker name, Simon Willison.

Boarding #Amtrak 1333 (#AmtrakBorealis) CHI-MSP! Looking forward to #NICAR25, including presenting on how to approach #DataJournalism in a smaller newsroom. (And maybe I'll get some #embroidery done on the train!)
A promotional graphic for a panel at the NICAR25 conference in Minneapolis. The panel is titled, "Data reporting for smaller newsrooms," and it takes place at 11:30 a.m. CT on Friday, March 7. The panelists are: Cody Lillich of KTVK/KPHO-TV, Kate Martin of APM Reports, Justin Myers of the Chicago Sun-Times, and Junyao Yang of Mission Local.

Merry Christmas from @juliajrh.bsky.social and me (and our little one)!
A family of three Lego minifigures stands on a green build plate. The one on the left has a hoodie or track jacket, colored teal and pink and white, along with pink pants. She has long, dark hair just past her shoulder. A white cat stands by her leg. In the middle is a shorter one: a child with lighter-colored pigtails and a sparkly purple shirt, plus a pattern of rainbow sprinkles on her shoes. She is holding a donut with pink frosting and more sprinkles. And on the right is another full-size minifig, with a purple and white top, a white belt, and a dark blue skirt. They have dark, wavy hair and are wearing glasses and holding a wrench. (You might recognize this person as my account’s avatar.)

Boarding United #UA1963 ORD-BWI! Looking forward to an especially packed #nicar24 (and my first journalism conference after leaving Twitter). If you’ll be in Baltimore, say hi! (1/4)
A person sits in front of an airport window, with a jet bridge visible outside. He is wearing glasses and a purple face mask and has dark curly hair. He appears to be smiling behind the mask, and he is wearing a T-shirt that says, “America needs journalists.”

For sure, but considering the alternative… (cw: central nervous systems having a Bad Time™)
Text from Wikipedia: “Accidental injection of vinca alkaloids into the spinal canal (intrathecal administration) is highly dangerous, with a mortality rate approaching 100 percent. The medical literature documents cases of ascending paralysis due to massive encephalopathy and spinal nerve demyelination, accompanied by intractable pain, almost uniformly leading to death. Several patients have survived after aggressive and immediate intervention. Rescue treatments consist of washout of the cerebrospinal fluid and administration of protective medications. Children may do better following this injury. One child, who was aggressively treated at the time of the injection, recovered almost completely with only mild neurological deficits.”

The trial jury wouldn't have been a grand jury, though. www.uscourts.gov/sites/defaul...
First paragraph from OP’s linked article, with the phrase “a federal grand jury convicted” circled: “Two years after (mostly) losing out in an antitrust case meant to puncture Apple’s dominance of the smartphone-app marketplace, the video game juggernaut Epic Games has finally notched a historic victory—one worthy of its name—against a different Big Tech giant. This week, a federal grand jury convicted Google on four charges of establishing an antitrust market through the Play Store, Google’s Android-centric equivalent to Apple’s App Store.”Excerpt from this post’s linked document, starting with the header, “NATURE OF THE GRAND JURY”: “The powers and functions of the federal grand jury differ from those of the federal trial jury, which is called the petit jury. The petit jury listens to the evidence offered by the prosecution and the defense (if it chooses to offer any) during a criminal trial and returns a verdict of guilty or not guilty. The grand jury, on the other hand, does not determine guilt or innocence, but only whether there is probable cause to believe that a crime was committed and that a specific person or persons committed it. If the grand jury finds that probable cause exists against a person suspected of having committed the crime, then it will return a written statement of the charges called an “indictment.” After that, the person will go to trial.”

Welp, finally doing some actual setup over here given the weekend's news about the old place. I'm still expecting to be more Mastodon-centric (find me there at mastodon.sdf.org/@myersjustinc if you like)—but I do realize more of my professional circle has landed here, so I'll be around.
A Twitter post from Justin Myers (@myersjustinc):

“9,500+ posts over 15+ years.
So long, Twitter, and thanks for all the fish.

(Much easier to call it X upon leaving it, eh?)
