Flying is officially on course to account for *almost all* the UK's carbon dioxide emissions by 2050. Heathrow expansion alone would cause more carbon emissions by 2054 than *any other sector of the economy*. So why is it being contemplated? My column. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

The expansion of Heathrow would be an expensive disaster for Britain and the world. Burnham needs to block it | George Monbiot
A third runway would fly in the face of reason. If we are to prioritise human life over short-term ‘growth’, we need to use planes less, not more, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

So pleased to hear this confirmed in the PM’s speech. Big congrats to @makevotesmatter.bsky.social and all who’ve campaigned for it! At last we have a chance to restore trust in our politics with a system where “everyone’s views count and everyone’s vote matters” 👏👏👏

Private jets are never essential. Last week I raised concerns about emissions from Dundee Airport. Now, during Climate Week Scotland, the world’s fastest private jet has landed in Dundee from Atlanta for the Dunhill Links Championship. Dundee is facing huge pressure on its council budget. 1/2
Graphic from Maggie Chapman MSP and the Scottish Greens featuring a photograph of Maggie beside an image of a private jet. Text reads: “No one needs a private jet” and “‘World’s fastest’ private jet lands in Dundee from Atlanta ahead of Dunhill Links Championship.” The Courier logo appears on the graphic.

I give about 90% of my talks virtually and only travel when I can bundle enough events to make the time and the carbon worthwhile (25 events in 3 days at NY Climate Week last week 😅). It is exhausting, no lie. But sadly we live in a world where doing things right is harder than not. More here ...

'Climate scientists should cut back on air travel'
Researchers and their institutions should set a good low-carbon example to their communities, says Katharine Hayhoe, director of climate science at Texas Tech University.

During grad school, we’d say that climate change is happening, but we can’t definitively say it’s due to humans (even though we were pretty sure it was). It might be technically correct to say that we can’t definitively say what happened in Nepal/Tibet is due to climate change, but really, we can.

I started my PhD program with an eight week old at home, sole income being my doctoral stipend, in a history program, in Knoxville, TN. And every month we got a new book to read to my son, free, mailed to us, so my kid, my kids, grew up in rooms full of books even when I had no money. That's Dolly.

Europe's electricity: 29% fossil fuels in 2024, down from 53% in 2005. Progress. But transport is still 92% fossil. Buildings: 71%. Industry: 61%. And 95% of EU oil and 88% of gas imported. Switching suppliers doesn't fix this. Electrification and efficiency do. More here: rdcu.be/feOjc

Walkers must therefore roll up their trousers and wade across the river within an hour either side of low tide."
