Friendly reminder that Duolingo was initially concieved to trick people into translating articles for free, which they later used as training data for MTL algorithms. Duolingo's primary purpose has NEVER been about teaching you a language, even from the start! slate.com/technology/2...

If it doesn’t charge users and, so far, doesn’t serve them any ads, how does Duolingo make money? It tricks you into working as an unpaid translation service. At the end of some lessons, Duolingo will ask you if you want to practice by translating a real-world document. Which will turn out to be, say, a BuzzFeed article. By melding together enough stabs at this task from high-level Duolingo users, the app can render a surprisingly accurate translation. Which is worth good money. So far, Duolingo has contracts with BuzzFeed and CNN to translate stories from English into languages such as Spanish, French, and Portuguese. This service is already earning Duolingo hundreds of thousands of dollars a year, but von Ahn predicts he will be adding a raft of new clients soon. “The language translations market is huge,” he says. “It’s a $30 billion per year market.”

So, the way this works is they can now sign their own warrants, as I'm hearing it explained to me by someone more legally in-the-know. Remember that you have a right to say NOTHING if ICE comes to your home. Give them no reason- don't answer questions- they can warp into cause.

It's less that and more so normalizing this behavior of treating things that make you uncomfortable as evil that needs to be put out instead of moderating what you yourself see and interact with. This normalization gives people excuses to harass others they find "weird and disgusting"

NOBODY in their right mind is advocating for REAL abuse material to be made legal. NO ONE should EVER want that. But fiction? When you ban "animal abuse" then is furry kink art out the window? When you ban "depictions of violence" then is horror out the window? You're throwing it all away.

By censoring fiction of one type you are paving the way to censor fiction of -all- types. There is -no- clear guide on what is and is not abusive material OTHER THAN what is and is not -real-. Fiction is not real. If you don't like a specific type of fiction, then don't consume it. Easy as that.

You might see several artists mad about the bluesky policy update banning non-con, even artists who do not make that kind of material, and wonder why it's such a problem. If that's you, here is a quick breakdown: 🧵

Baning one thing will just lead to banning everything cuz everything will be seen as "offensive" by someone, somewhere. Your personal discomfort isn't public offence.

Addendum: Also, what about stories where highlighting the abusive aspect of an interaction *is the point*? Not every depiction of nudity or sex is something you're meant to get off to. Does that content and those stories just no longer have a place on this site?

This party is totally all that and a bag of yiff~! #90's #furryart #tfsky

Himalaya, the pink anthropomorphic fox with long green hair, stands in a boring empty room. They are looking to an unseen person, saying "Seriously? 'party like it's the 90's? That sounds absolutely nonsensical." But as they say that, a hard, reality altering cut is made, as the room becomes a pixelated and posterized, like it's from a 90's videogame. Himalaya has fundamentally changed in both body and mind to fit 90's furry artwork and characters. They continue talking where they were cut off, "That sounds absolutely wonderful, darling! I'd *love* to participate... 'Specially if we're getting down and murr-ty~!" Their body has become particularly voluptuous, as they massage their breasts and look at the viewer with a seductive gaze. Wouldn't you like to go to that party, boo?
