This week, the Government also pushed ahead with its controversial change to gut the Conservation Act. It passed its first reading in Parliament and Jones is openly boasting about it. He’s telling the public that protected land is officially open for business.

Industry lobbyists NZ Minerals Council (formerly Straterra) wants you to believe this is for the green transition, but she is courting the USA which has very different priorities. An ambitious energy transition does not require sacrificing vital ecosystems that sustain life on Earth.

Yesterday (the Minister for Resources) Shane Jones hosted mining executives with a US delegation in his Beehive office. Trump wants access to minerals in New Zealand which could be used to fuel his war machine.

If Luxon signs a minerals deal with the US, it opens the floodgates for destructive land and seabed mining in Aotearoa. It would turn us into a US military outpost and implicate us in its warmongering, at the cost of our environment.

What I observed in Ōpunake a week ago was an activation of people from all walks of life - Mana moana, young people, surfers, farmers, NGOs, tangata tiriti, tangata whenua - on this one waka, energise and ready to send TTR on its way and stop seabed mining before it gets a chance to start
