Sometimes the best approach is classic lineart → flat color → rendering. I love it for detailed, complex subjects and concept art. I shy away from lineart when I want to paint motion, mood and lighting. Maybe one day I'll be experienced enough to get it all from a simple sketch!

I started the sketch for Vaskihamina twice: the first time early in the morning before going to work, and the second time after that workday, as I thought I had lost my Photoshop file. Later I found the og sketch too, and it's funny how similar the sketches are.

I like to do 1-5 warmup sketches every morning just to throw away (the act of throwing away is a very important part of it, otherwise you start trying too much and the whole point of warming up gets lost), but among these I accidentally found an idea I liked.

The boats and the riverlands are among my favourite in this book! I made alot of studies and paintings of this subject before eventually breaking out Blender to do the blockout for the final illustration. You can find Kaukasalo, the finnish L&L world book, at any well-prepared bookstore!
