What does it mean when ‘new slang’ and ‘paint the town red’ are both in your top 5 songs on Spotify wrapped?

After I moved to Canada a couple of years ago I realized that I was no longer constantly running a massive stress routine in the background of my mind worrying about health care and guns. It was weirdly noticeable only when it stopped.

The Wizard of Oz being one of the most enduring works of American fiction while also being originally written hyper-specifically as a commentary on 1890s monetary policy is a good reminder that good execution beats good ideas.

We strongly suggest that academic publishers and other platforms that host research rapidly implement a Share to Bluesky button for their articles. Here's how: docs.bsky.app/docs/advance... #AcademicSky #HigherEd #Altmetrics

The new Martha Stewart doc crystalized something for me. Stewart reminds me more of a pro athlete than an influencer. She sells lots of cookbooks and home goods for much the same reason Michael Jordan sold lots of shoes: Relentless proficiency is hypnotic. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

Martha Stewart’s Empire Monetized More Than Just Domesticity
A new documentary reminds us that the lifestyle guru was also selling the pleasure of mastery.

I think America would be in a better place if we just nicely asked the CEO of Costco to run the country.

people keep being dumbfounded that folks “didn’t do their research,” before voting and i can’t repeat enough that many people can’t read. 1 in 5 americans cannot read english at a level high enough to make low level inferences.[1] 1. nces.ed.gov/pubs2019/201...
What are the rates of literacy in the United States?
Four in five U.S. adults (79 percent) have English literacy skills sufficient to complete tasks that require comparing and contrasting information, paraphrasing, or making low-level inferences— literacy skills at level 2 or above in PIAAC (OECD
2013). In contrast, one in five U.S. adults (21
percent) has difficulty completing these tasks (figure 1). This translates into 43.0 million U.S. adults who possess low literacy skills: 26.5 million at level 1 and 8.4 million below level 1, while 8.2 million could not participate in PIAAC's background survey either because of a language barrier or a cognitive or physical inability to be interviewed. These adults who were unable to participate are categorized as having low English literacy skills, as is done in international reports (OECD 2013), although no direct assessment of their skills is available.
