Yesterday I sent out birthday party invites for my child that not only had the wrong time, the wrong date, AND the wrong location, but somehow ALSO THE WRONG AGE. I am writing this from the grave.

You’ve never seen an underwater adventure quite like this! Marvin the merchild is perfectly happy to play alone with his best friend, Pearl. Even though Pearl always hides, and he always seeks, sticking to his reef feels safer than asking the other ocean creatures to play. But when Pearl rolls away,
The cover of Oh, Pearl features an underwater ocean scene: Marvin the merchild peers over a rock at a glimmering pearl.

Exactly 20 years ago today, I walked through the doors of the Time & Life Building to start my first job in publishing at Little, Brown Books for Young Readers! Please enjoy some 2006 photos from my Canon Elph:

Remembering the time I wrote a three page essay (on my mom's word processor) about the pleasures of visiting the county dump. My English teacher wrote: "To the dump, to the dump, to the dump dump dump!" in the margins. Gennifer Aeye could never.

How many shades of blue can you name? When twelve-year-old Margot’s art teacher challenges the class to find and name eleven different versions of the same color, Margot can think of three right away: swimming pool. Denim jacket. First-prize ribbon. But then she starts thinking about home—
Hard cover copy of Eleven Kinds of Blue on a white bookshelf. The cover, all in shades of blue and white, shows a girl on a bench looking up at birds flying across the sky.

I'd pay good money for a book + meal subscription service. FLIRTING LESSONS + crispy potatoes; CANDLE ISLAND + donuts; THE TROUBLE WITH HEROES + cookies; NANNY PIGGINS + chocolate cake; MAGNOLIA WU UNFOLDS IT ALL + noodles. (Fruit and vegetable options will be considered, but no guarantees.)

Wondering how to feel about the fact that the "Mom" in my child's recent comics (1-inspired by Jason Shiga): - gives their child a T-Rex as a pet (2) - can't live without coffee (3-not explicitly "Mom" but mom-coded!); - stays home to play games on her phone (4) - self-explanatory/accurate (5). 😅

What happens when you use—and lose—one of your family’s special heirlooms? Lana finds out when she tries to use the surfboard that has been passed down in her family from mother to daughter for generations. When she admits what happened, she thinks she will be met with anger. 1/3

I always thought parents were exaggerating about the wild last weeks of school. Joke's on me: this week my child is supposed to dress "like a region of Virginia." (Also: the solar system, an idiom, a future career, and a book character.)

Hey adults: a reminder that when you talk about books, kids are listening. That animated character won't hear you call their books trash, but the kid who loves reading about them might. When you tell a child to go back and pick out some 'real' books or say "not this one again," what they hear is,

The thing IS actually, there are so many incredible books that do serve children, speak to children, are exciting for children to read -- but those books die the death of invisibility. The industry doesn't give them material marketing/publicity support, and gatekeepers don't find them.

Friends, sometimes silly men say silly things. And sometimes, those silly things are also hurtful things, or damaging things, or things that disrupt the important and caring work that we all set out to do every single day. So it goes. But in the meantime, I have a message for children's authors:

A purely capitalistic reason I believe AI won’t take over publishing is that it’s built on a workforce of smart people who accept lower salaries in exchange for work they are passionate about. If they wanted to work for Sauron, they’d go into a better paying field.

"The more books that are rushed to market, the more opportunities there will be for similar situations to occur—with publishers, authors, and readers all paying the costs. And in an industry already fraught with inequity, publishers risk diminishing the very elements that should set them apart."
