Wow. Even I, with all my cynicism about the DeJoy-initiated takeover of the postal service -- including as an elections inspector who is sickened at the manipulation of mail-in ballot processes -- never *conceived* of the USPS being turned into a spy fleet. Jesus.

how we know “let me see that beautiful smile baby” isn’t concern for our wellbeing is that when we don’t you kill us

Ohhhh, no! This would be awful anyway but as someone born and raised in Philadelphia I am gutted.

I just had to reboot my laptop and it recovered this document that got tanked mid sentence and honestly, fair
A recovered Word document that says only "I have been trying"

welp I switched to Glassdoor instead and turns out they're about to merge with Indeed and require you to agree to their joint TOS and I fucking hate all of this. Glassdoor was useful when it first appeared, as was Indeed. I hate so so much that everything seems ruined. Not news, I know. Still.

Julie Polk @juliepolk.com · 10/09/2026
Has anyone logged into Indeed lately? I just went in for quick check on something and they now use AI and you cannot sign out without agreeing to their new terms of service, apparently -- or at least, I couldn't find a way to reject their TOS and exit. (So now of course I am enraged.)

So having griped about the vets and the bag, in fact the cremation service did a lovely job — the urn is cedar and smells wonderful, and the paw print made me a little teary in the best way. Bon voyage, my little bear. You were the best.
On the left is a black leather pet memorial box opened to show a paw print and a brass name plate that says "Lola." On the right is a square cedar urn.

Welp, the emergency vet I took Lola to last week were pretty awful about the whole thing but at least the cremation service put her ashes in a fancy shopping bag I guess
A black shopping bag with a slight sheen, a woven satiny cord handle and an embossed paw print in the lower right corner.

These people refuse to admit that Biden won in 2020, but they apparently believe he won in 2024.

I love the performing arts library! Highly recommend getting a membership if you're in NYC, but it is pretty geared toward research as opposed to an entertainment/screening venue. Still a great way to see things like this.

Typically videos are made available in individual carrels and you watch with headphones. There's a lab that can be used for screenings, but it seems mostly in service of making new work. www.nypl.org/about/locati...

As a tribute to Dolly, why not donate a book? Leave one is a free library. Give one to a friend or neighbor or child. Buy one for a teacher’s wishlist. If you have book donation ideas, add them to this thread. Dolly would love to see people getting books!

Somehow I got through this entire day without knowing. I cannot remember the last time losing a public figure made me cry. Dolly Parton was the best of us.

I drove thousands of miles across the country this summer and the number of data center cooling systems I saw being trucked across interstates was astounding. A few years ago, you’d see windmill blades pretty regularly. But this was orders of magnitude more. Every state. Everywhere.

I just taught improv to a group of 6 - 11 year olds and when one of the two boys kept making his imaginary bubble vehicle stronger than everyone else’s and knocking them over one of the girls made it so strong that he got trapped inside it forever

I interned for a literary agent many moons ago who told me never to give main characters names starting with the same letter for exactly this reason. It drove her nuts.

Ah, our posts crossed. I guess in this case -- because I really do hear you on the regs, and you know better than I do -- I apparently disagree with the regulation. About which ,as a fan... oh, well 🤣. Just going to have to live with it, clearly. Thanks for the info.

Okay, I hear you on the regulation, and thank you for the clarification. Gonna agree to disagree on Chilufya's arm position on this one, though :)

But not every ball that makes contact with an arm or hand is a handball.

Julie Polk @juliepolk.com · 17/08/2026
In addition to Aaron's point about sequence, isn't it being considered a handball at all dependent on the arm being in an unnatural position? Because Chilufya's wasn't, given the moment. I think that was a bad call. And it's maddening to see center refs defer without question to VARs.

I'd forgotten about Picnic at Hanging Rock (and can't wait to watch it now) but Heavenly Creatures is one of the all time greats and it *baffles* me that it's not watchable. Especially because Kate Winslet AND Melanie Lynskey? Like... who doesn't think this should be out there?

Album cover of Liz Phair's 1993 Exile in Guyville. A black and white photo of her topless against a black shadowy background that shadows her eyes (or with a black cloth/shawl/fabric draped over her head?). She's angled toward the camera, her mouth open like she's yelling or about to swallow something (given this album, probably the latter), with several chain necklaces of different lengths, including a choker with a black stone pendant, draped around her neck and down her chest. Her name and the album title run across the image in purple block type.

JFC Facebook is randomly now asking me for a 2fa code which I didn't set up and offering no alternative or way to *get* a QR code to set up 2fa (which I don't want to do for FB in the first place) and... I think they're going to make me do some kind of multi-day ID verification process?

I didn't know I could do this until you wrote this! I wonder if it's related to the thing I can do where I close off my nostrils from inside so I can block out most/sometimes all noxious smells. I thought everyone could do that until someone told me they couldn't.

focus or communicate well or make quick decisions, and all of those things brought them down. So. Tim Ream and Cristian Roldan are the only players in their 30s, and at least 9 of the current roster will still be in their 20s at the next world cup.

the way they did the rest of the tournament (and their last warmup friendlies for that matter). I'm sad they didn't, and I'm sure they're wrecked because about 80% of this was them beating themselves with some genuinely shocking mistakes. They were visibly nervous and when you're nervous you can't

FFS the USMNT loss had nothing to do with Trump and it's not some kind of poetic justice or victory for morality. (As if a victory for morality could ever come anywhere near FIFA or Gianni Infantino.) This team could absolutely have at least hung with and very possibly beaten Belgium if they played

We cannot know what the Black woman on the train was thinking or feeling at this moment. But we recognize the image as an indictment. It should make all of us pause to consider what it is that we are celebrating as America turns 250. The latest from @errinhaines.bsky.social:

The Black woman on the train did not look away. How much longer will we?
A viral photo from July 4 captured an unidentified Black woman’s composure amid a sea of masked white men — and became a mirror for our democracy at 250.

Would love to know the percentage of people declaring that Balogun shouldn't play who even knew his name three weeks ago.
000
Julie Polk @juliepolk.com · 06/07/2026
Just to be super clear, Balogun deserves to play, the red card was egregiously wrong, there is precedent for overturning them in world cup matches. That Trump and Gianni Infantino are equally corrupt and disgusting doesn't change any of that.
