My favorite Sam Neil fact will always be that he designed a future Australian flag that replaces the union jack with the aboriginal flag for Event Horizon and insisted the film use it.

Finding out today via his Instagram that he had passed was like a punch in the gut. It has been a long time since I've cried for someone I don't know, but he was a very special man who lived and loved his life to the fullest. Rest in peace, you incredible soul.

Several years ago, when I was on Twitter, my favorite account belonged to Sam Neill. He shared life on his farm with his animals (all named after celebrity friends), his vineyard, and so many other eclectic, fascinating tidbits. He was a warrior for NZ and the planet. And he beat cancer.
