I was maybe half as fast as most of them, as fast as two grannies who I couldn't believe were picking berries all day in the hot sun. I've never felt the same about fresh produce. The work is amazingly difficult and they were happy and kind to me. I was a kid in 1986, it made a deep impression.

At age 18, in Southern California and dead broke, I picked strawberries for four days for $1 per big box and a ham sandwich for lunch. The Mexican ladies taught me. On day three, the lead woman who had a little English said, "you work hard for a white girl." I have never been more proud in my life.

I could not agree with you more. This aligns with my experience, my friendships with immigrants, and how they put us to shame with their work ethic. Bernardo and his family are some of my dearest friends. We met him in 2007. I would do anything for them. But I can't explain this country.
