Thanks @pailbuckets.bsky.social for the inspiration for German pronunciation assessment. I’m suggesting the following grade distribution: adelig (F) - gutbürgerlich (C) - Pöbel (A+).

I’m trying to convince myself that speaking English and living in the US has actually made me nicer when I speak German.

Love the Santa Clause analogy for the Standard Language Ideology: “these are a man-made phenomenon, and therefore they are not fixed. They are not divine, and we can do something about it. We don’t have to just accept this. We can question this. We can mold this ourselves.”

Life in U.S. monolinguistan: When people overhear you speak German with your child and are proudly commenting on how they’ve noticed that you have an “accent”. Dude, this is not me pretending to speak English, it’s another LANGUAGE!

Favorite student response to ‘German is like …’: “a language. Insane, hated by many who are close enough to it to see its flaws, loved by many who are far enough from it to see its deceptive sparkle, and needed by an entire society to survive. So, it continues to exist.”
