I've reviewed 100s of inequality papers in sociology. Some fantastic, some abysmal, most in between. I can recall very few papers as weak as Rubin's report by criteria of logical coherence, objectivity, and evidentiary standards. The irony would be funny, if there wasn't so much at stake.

My colleague JL Martin’s (my Chicago colleague and editor of AJS) assessment of Rubin’s Vandy report on sociology is now released. Mine is forthcoming; so is Geoff Wodtke’s. But you won‘t need to read ours. JLM‘s 40-page assessment is sufficient. It’s both devastating and hilarIous. 1/3

The Vandy-Wash report on sociology should not be dismissed bc of its political implications. It should be dismissed bc it has little to no data, mischaracterizes the data it does have & is filled w/logical fallacies, misattributions & contradictions. More on this from my UChicago colleagues & I soon

3/3 I think that what makes sociology vulnerable to such misunderstandings is that sociologists are reflexive about their politics, while other disciplines seen as non-political aren’t, & fail to realize the politics embedded in their mode of analysis and founding theories

Everyone assumes “sociology” (as if it is homogenous) is more ’politicized’ than economics. But is that so? Or is it that economists’ politics go unrecognized because they are built into the very assumptions of the entire discipline & and its formal models? 1/3

In my dept there is a sociologist who has spent her career showing that divorce is bad & marriage is good; & another who conducted studies showing that more cops reduces crime, etc. the work is sound & I ain’t complainIng. But this whining about lack of ‘normie beliefs’ is total made up BS

What’s crazy is that A. Rubin talked at my university (invited by the law school) and claimed that the AJS is too politicized and activist. Too many articles about inequality and social justice. The AJS! Hosted by the University of Chicago Sociology Dept.! Too activist? It’s absurd. Totally absurd.

Oddly, their claims towards ’rigor’ and non-politicization sound as if they are operating in the autonomous sector of the Bourdieusian field but in actuality they are simply appealing to the heteronomous pole 5/5

Julian Go @juliango.bsky.social · 25/07/2026
& T&S? Haha. It claims to bring in rigor then publishes articles by Gad Saad & Rubin and pass them off as social theory. Or empirical articles that do nothing but show correlation and claim causation, by the same clowns who complain that somehow sociologists don’t do causal inference well 4/5

They complain about what they call ‘relativism’ without knowing the difference between situated knowledge & relativism while implicitly themselves relying upon a situated knowledge position as they claim that sociologists have created their own knowledge bubble 3/5

Julian Go @juliango.bsky.social · 25/07/2026
What is most ridiculous is when the grifters claim that so-called politicized sociologists’ aren’t rigorous in their analyses yet themselves happily make unfounded claims like “sociology’s standing in the public is due to politicization” or ”everything in sociology is activist” 2/5

Julian Go @juliango.bsky.social · 25/07/2026
I’d add not just bad faith actors who spurn the field, but grifters who willfully misrepresent the field (or they don’t read) to get attention; or for spite bc they feel entitled to all the wine and they aren’t getting it bc they do unrigorous research. 1/5
