Headstone for Eugene Williams, whose murder was the first in a wave of racialized violence in Chicago in the summer of 1919. 102 years after his death, a group of people determined to see him remembered & honored were successful in getting his grave marked.
Color photo taken in Lincoln Cemetery in Blue Island of the grave marker placed for Eugene Williams, a child who accidentally floated over an invisible border at a segregated Chicago beach and was murdered for it, touching off days of racialized violence in 1919. The marker is extremely shiny in this shot and has a lot of difficult to transcribe text, but the dates alone remind us of just how young he was at the time of his death:

Lorenzo Salgado Araujo called Houston home for 35 years. On Tuesday, an ICE agent shot and killed him. His family learned of his death from a video before anyone bothered to knock on their door.
