📢 New article: “Appraisive Things” by @julesholroyd.bsky.social & @liao.shen-yi.org! Why use prizes, trophies and statues to praise others when words might suffice? The authors show how the finitude and durability of things enrich our understanding of praise.

(I mean this to strengthen your case. Many academics would agree it is a good idea in one case, so should in the other).

Jules @julesholroyd.bsky.social · 24/07/2026

By the same token - where are the processes where academics advise, fund and judge the faculty and Uni managers...?! (Most academics in the UK would agree this is much needed too, I think.)

@julesholroyd.bsky.social and I have a paper on material expressions of praise—monuments and memorials, plaques and trophies, grants and prizes—which we call "appraisive things". It is forthcoming at the Journal of the APA (open access!) and a preprint is available at philpapers.org/rec/HOLATB-4

This project started a long while back. I was a big fan of @julesholroyd.bsky.social 's "Oppressive Praise" (the article), which I think of as a part of this new wave of works on diagonal moral psychology. Though praise is valenced positively, it can still—sometimes—be morally negative.

Can it really be legal for our employers to assume we are taking part in ASOS (by not replacing teaching missed due to strike) and lock us out on that basis? Yes, this is what UoS management are doing to us.

Should pornography be authentic? Some people think so, and partly because they think this would make it better ethically rather than just, well, better. Rosa Vince disagrees!
