My talk at for the Royal Institute of Philosophy, "Why Philosophers Need to Think About Pregnancy" is available to watch online. My presentation isn't great here. There's quite a bit of fumbling and awkward looking at notes. But I hope the content is interesting. www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZDV...

Trans people and feminists keep refining approaches to our collective liberation. This great new article by @matthewjcull.bsky.social, @fionawoollard.bsky.social and Jules Holroyd recommends a pluralist approach to inclusive language, building on the Brighton & Sussex midwives' additive approach.

I asked my students to guess what I was attempting to draw here. ‘A melting snowman?’ No. ‘Someone who got hit by a trolley?’ No. They did guess. (And responded with laughter and groans.) Can you guess? (Sorry no alt text possible for this one.)

Keen to use language inclusively?
Unsure how?
Using language in inclusive ways can be difficult. Popular approaches - gender neutral or gender additive - are not always effective.
These workshops facilitate conversations between experts in applied philosophy of language and practitioners in perinatal care, to troubleshoot how to formulate public-facing messages about perinatal & postnatal care in inclusive ways.

I was talking to a child who was scared of butterflies. I explained flight patterns and how they are unique to each species. Explaining the reasons behind their seemingly chaotic behavior, helped replaced fear with curiosity. Sometimes fear around insects is just a fear of the unknown.

I keep seeing videos of horrified Americans who have just found out that British people don’t rinse their dishes after washing up. 30% replies: British people saying that everyone here rinses their dishes. 30%: British people defending the no rinse method. Me: trying to remember how I do the dishes.

In Friday’s Nature Briefing, we note that some scientists are rebuilding community in a little place called Bluesky… 🦋 eepurl.com/i4LHFQ
‘A place of joy’: scientists decamp to Bluesky
A wave of academics and researchers have defected from the social media platform Twitter/X, with many heading to upstart Twitter-lookalike Bluesky. Part of the attraction is the ease of gathering worthy connections through moderated lists such as the Science feed and ‘starter packs’ of scientists to follow. “I’d really like it to continue to be a place of joy for me,” says bioacoustics researcher Daryll Carlson. Others say that, despite a rise in pornography, spam, bots and abusive content on Twitter, the platform remains a valuable tool for science communication. “If good experts quit X, who will offer evidence-based input on X?” asks tuberculosis researcher Madhukar Pai.

Love this. ‘Queue’ is from the French word with the same spelling (but pronounced as ‘kuh’) meaning an animal’s long tail. In the 18th and 19th centuries it also referred to a pigtail and was sometimes spelled as ‘cue’, which gave us the name of the long thin rod used in snooker.
