Kausaatio (X->Y) voidaan todentaa (oletusten pitäessä paikkaansa) ilman tietoa mekanismeista.

Watts kritisoi etenkin Verstehen -traditiota, jossa ymmärrettäviä mekanismeja helposti liimataan selityksiksi havaituille yhteyksille.

010
Juho Härkönen @juhoharkonen.bsky.social · 09/01/2026
Ok.

Good to see a piece about the EUI in The Economist. But this is a hatched job, with little resemblance to reality. Charlemagne is usually excellent, so this is odd. Can only think that @spignal.bsky.social talked to people who don't really know what's going on. www.economist.com/europe/2025/...

Realistisesti, tuskin taipuisi.

10:n vuoden rahoitus tutkimusryhmälle milli / vuosi starttirahalla.

Got it. An alternative would be to equalize outcomes (e.g., income) when inequalities arise from conditions that are hard and questionable to treat (a no-child policy would be the ultimate equalizer of inequalities bw kods, but maybe not so smart either)

Juho Härkönen @juhoharkonen.bsky.social · 04/12/2024
Just following up on Martin’s point, my intuition is also that bw-processes are more important for inequality (and I’ve rarely done any within stuff myself) but the twin study results especially have made me wonder to what extent is it simply because that’s the way we’ve learned to think about ineq

Juho Härkönen @juhoharkonen.bsky.social · 04/12/2024
I agree. It can be all noise. But we also don’t know
110
Juho Härkönen @juhoharkonen.bsky.social · 04/12/2024
I think mine is more a comment on theory than the sib diff design; theory hasn’t often even considered within family variation, and even less whether effects of say parenting should be different if we considered within rather than bw variation. But the points you raised are good for thinking abt it
000
Juho Härkönen @juhoharkonen.bsky.social · 04/12/2024
Fertility decline will make bw more prominent, though I’m not certain bw-processes are immediately more important for overall inequality (a sib corr in income of 0.2-0.3 could be used to question that). And birth order isn’t totally a zero-sum game (resource dilution is absolute not relative)
100
Juho Härkönen @juhoharkonen.bsky.social · 04/12/2024
I agree that some RQs (say, class differences in parenting) are obviously bw-family ones while others (is the first-born favored over the second born) are within Qs. In other cases it’s less obvious, for certain type of parenting can happen between or within families.
