The night is getting late, and we haven't heard much back with only 10 ridings left. Here is where the model stands, my final post for the night. PQ 59 (58-61) PLQ 40 (38-41) PCQ 19 (18-19) QS 9 (9-9) CAQ 0 (0-1) #jszym_qc2026 #cdnpoli #qcpoli #qc2026

Only 17 ridings left! Model says PQ 59 (57-61) PLQ 39 (37-40) PCQ 19 (18-21) QS 10 (9-10) CAQ 0 (0-2)

At 92/127 ridings, I've seen enough. I'm quite sure this is a PQ minority. The model says there's 99% chance of a PQ minority. CAQ's likelihood of getting wiped-out is increasing. PQ 57 (53-61) PLQ 41 (38-43) PCQ 19 (17-22) QS 9 (8-10) CAQ 1 (0-2) #qc2026 #cdnpoli #jszym_qc2026 #qcpoli

Alright, we're nearly half way through. The leaders of QS, the PLQ, and PQ have all won their seats. Christine Frechette is embattled in her riding, currently neck-and-neck with the PQ candidate Jean Pellerin. PQ's hopes for a majority, always slim, are further slipping (6.7%). Things haven't […]

Another volley, approaching 20% of the ridings called, but naturally all rather safe ones, but the expected number of seats for CAQ are slowly dropping. Currently we have an expected number of 3 seats (down 1) with a max of 5 and a min of 0. PCQ has picked up that expected seat for a total of […]

We've got 8/127 ridings called so far, but the projections haven't changed much as they've been called in safe ridings. Radio-Canada just announced that the next government will be a PQ government, but we were pretty sure about that even yesterday so no big surprises. #jszym_qc2026 #qc2026 […]

26 of the 27 EU member states use proportional systems, as well as the EU Parliament. If Mark Carney believes this is where the international order will be rebuilt, let's join them and embrace the same democratic standard.

7/ 🔧 What’s next? We propose stricter evaluation pipelines for any paired biological dataset and highlight the need for pLMs that truly understand protein context and generalize to out-of-distribution proteins and tasks.

Joseph Szymborski :qcca: @jszym.cosocial.ca.ap.brid.gy · 13/02/2026
6/ 📚 Take home messages 1. Pretrained pLMs can leak data → over optimistic PPI scores. 2. Leakage is task specific; non paired tasks may stay unaffected. 3. SqueezeProt is a new pLM that is 5x faster, no test in train. 4. Current models still fail on some real-world tasks.

Joseph Szymborski :qcca: @jszym.cosocial.ca.ap.brid.gy · 13/02/2026
5/ 🌍 These pLMs kind suck on generalizing to real-world tasks, data leakage or not. Both pLM based and classic models stumble on: - Human–SARS CoV 2 interaction predictions - Point mutation effects on binding affinity
A Receiver-Operator Characteristic plot of methods w/ and w/o data leakage when tested on human v. human interactions and human v. SARS-CoV-2 interactions. The human-virus interactions have AUROCs close to 0.5 whereas the human-human interactions have good performance.

4/ The pLM data leakage problem isn't present for all tasks. When we tested the same pLMs on protein keyword annotation (a non paired task), performance stayed stable. Leakage might be specific to paired sequence problems like PPI.
A clustered bar chart with keyword categories on the x-axis and performance on the y-axis (Normalized Discounted Cumulative Gain). It shows little or no difference between models with and without data leakage.

3/ 🐇 We came up with a new ultra-fast pLM with no data leakage during these experiments. It's truly one of the more exciting aspects of this article in my mind. Training all these language models was tough work! That's why we created SqueezeProt, a new pLM which […] [Original post on cosocial.ca]
A scatter plot showing inference speed on the x-axis and predictive performance on the y-axis. SqueezeProt-U50 is on the far right, performing 5x faster than the competition while maintaining most of the performance.

2/ 🚨 Data leakage turns out to be a major problem for pre-trained pLMs on some tasks. We found that existing pretrained pLMs unintentionally leak information from training data into downstream PPI tasks, inflating test scores. Data leakage can cause performance scores to increase by over 10 %!

Rural Liberal voters and urban Conservative voters keep getting shut out even when they show up in huge numbers. A system that rewards geography instead of voters is not a real democracy. Proportional representation would finally make every vote count.

Text above him reads Rural Liberals and Urban Conservatives, and text below him says So, when do we get representation. In the second panel his father Nolan points confidently at him. Politicians love to warn that the other side has a radical agenda. Yet, they don't seem too concerned that first past the post means they can win a majority with less than 40% of the vote. Fear alone will not fix democracy. Proportional representation will.
A four-panel meme from Star Wars Episode II showing Padmé and Anakin in a meadow. Anakin says the opposition has been taken over by extremists. Padmé smiles and asks if he will pass proportional representation so they cannot win a majority with only 40 percent of the vote, then looks concerned when he does not answer.

Canada’s system traps us in large big-tent parties, forcing endless infighting and floor crossings. Proportional representation would let Canadians of every kind win seats for what they believe in instead of fighting for control of one tent.
Graphic with headline reading “Big tent parties lead to big tent infighting and instability.” Text explains that Canada’s electoral system forces the entire right into one party, creating divisions and instability, and that proportional representation would let Red Tories, progressive conservatives, libertarians, and social conservatives all win fair representation without being trapped under one banner. Includes a CBC headline about MP Chris d’Entremont leaving the Conservatives because of Poilievre’s leadership style.
