They had lead-lined steel cases for the LB core pieces. We have a photo (attached) of the cases used for the target pieces. Each case held two 4.2 kg rings, which were split between 3 C-54 planes for transport to Tinian, so that the loss of one would not be catastrophic to the schedule.

Paul Ehrenfest lecturing, based on the equations, about how Einstein discovered the wave-particle duality of light in 1909.
