🌺 New preprint with J.Pannell and @charlesmullon.bsky.social on the joint evolution of selfing and sex allocation! This joint evolution leads to an unexpected outcome: the emergence of androdioecy, which may either be stable or only a step on the path to complete selfing. 📝 ➡️ tinyurl.com/wf9xsv6v
Streamplot taken from the paper showing the joint evolutionary dynamics of the pollen export rate (x-axis) and the competitive advantage maternal plants grant their own pollen relative to other sources (y-axis). Stream arrows indicate the direction of selection.

Really I can’t take all the credit. A few other folks and maybe a couple of farmers and breeders have helped over the last 10,000 years.

Ok $11B is indeed a lot of money. But I will never understand why our gov balks at $11B for, say, discovering life on another planet, but happily spends orders of magnitude more to wipe out life on our own. www.cnn.com/2026/10/12/s...

Pretty simple really. A European friend I won’t name didn’t believe me that “Howdy” was an acceptable greeting. I was already scheduled to get to meet and shake hands with Obama and she bet me I wouldn’t say it to the president’s face. I did, he graciously replied, & moved on to the next handshake.

Sometimes my wife and I like to send each other text messages as though they’re democratic fundraising messages, and I believe she has produced the jewel of the form.
, it's
and I
have some personal news to share with you.
Being a mom is one of the greatest joys of my life, and I feel deeply that we should have salad tonight
This year has been challenging in many ways, and I have immense gratitude for the kindness and support of family, community, and people like you who have continued to stand by me through everything. It means the world, and I wanted you to be among the first to know that squash is in the oven and kale is in the fridge. As many of you are aware, ve been navigating one of the most challenging periods of my day while waiting for dinner.
Facing baseless federal hunger brought on by not eating since lunch, fighting for the working kids of this country, and now caring for a mean toddler and helping him grow up in a world that isn't always easy. But it has also reminded me exactly why I do this work and who I do it for.
I will never stop working to eat dinner. I will never stop fighting for what is right, even when there is also some feta in the fridge. And I will never stop being so very thankful that you are by my side in this important work and that there is tahini in the pantry for dressing
With love and gratitude,
stop to end

“Hard agree with Michael Baym: if you're going to AI-email me, send the prompt. That's where you did the actual thinking. The output is just autocomplete in a necktie. Give me the raw kernel, not the husk. Keep it a-maize-ingly simple, and spare me the "I hope this finds you wel." “

Unknown! My guess is someone imported seed from Mexico that was contaminated with teosinte and it got out of hand. My lab was asked by the Spanish gov ~2015 to figure out what teosinte it was. This paper and others have it right, but at the time we were under an agreement not to talk about it.
