Brilliant letter from Stuart Thompson to Jeremy Clarkson about his comments that benefit claimants should write weekly thank you letters to tax payers detailing how they spend their benefits each week.

Surely the banning of certain types of social media for the under 16s provides a golden opportunity for UK companies to develop safe alternatives (and for over 16s as well). AI must have reached a stage now where it can intercept and exclude all unsuitable and unsavoury content.

It's interesting to note that over the past 100 years, economic growth, job creation, and investment in the USA have all been greater under Democrat presidents than under Republican presidents. This is a message that seems to have been lost on the US electorate, especially recently.

Researchers warn UK has a “finance curse” – an oversized sector extracting wealth instead of creating it. If Britain wants to feel better off again, we need a financial system that invests in the real economy – not one that gambles with it. Andrew Curry explains

We are a leading economy but this isn't reflected in how we feel. The UK has fallen behind other countries on many metrics

Will be ironic if Trump turns his attention to Cuba thinking he can teach them a thing or two. Cuba's education system (free) is vastly superior to that of the US and its health system (also free) just as good with a far lower spend. Several indices of happiness are better for Cuba than for USA too.

When Argentina invaded the Falklands (300 miles from their shores), we (8,000 miles away) went to their rescue with the support of most of Europe. If the USA should invade Greenland (1200 miles from US shores), I hope the UK and Europe would come to their rescue; the distance is a mere 2,000 miles.

Just been catching up on the BBC's "Civilisations: Rise and Fall - Japan", only to hear Charles Moore stating that no society can afford to erect a wall around itself and take an isolationism stance if it is to survive. This from a supporter of Vote Leave, Brexit and an end to immigration!

Once every 20 years or so, the director-general of the BBC is forced to resign for being insufficiently rightwing. Alastair Milne in 1987. Greg Dyke in 2004. Tim Davie in 2025. The great irony is that the BBC was in all cases profoundly biased towards established power. But just not biased enough …

I can't believe that in this day and age they appear not to be aware of binary searching, which would reduce such tasks to minutes.

Blackpool's rate of new business formation (5.6 per 1000 people/yr) exceeds Oxfordshire's (4.2 per 1000 people/yr) It's that greater degree of entrepreneurial spirit that must account for the fact that Blackpool is famously more prosperous than Oxfordshire.

I'm surprised that so many people seem to be taken aback by Trump's imposition of tariffs and the way in which the sizes of these tariffs have been calculated. But the pros and cons of tariffs and the effects of implementing them in various ways is all spelled out in Trump's script: Project 2025.

Philip Hammond peddling the myth on Radio 4 that recent public sector pay rises fueled inflation. They didn't, since at least 30% was immediately returned to the employer (the government) in the form of income tax and national insurance, and more when VAT on purchases is taken into account.

Yesterday, Lancaster was disrupted by the visit of a very minor Royal to rededicate (why?) a war memorial: Richard Duke of Gloucester. Yes, I had never heard of him before either. He is 31st in line to the throne apparently. Do we really need such an extended Royal family to undertake such "tasks"?

Just as taxation can be used to redistribute income from rich to poor, so it could be used to encourage EV purchase. Tax sales of each new petrol/diesel car by, say, £3000, and offer it as a subsidy on the price of a new EV. Could also use fuel taxes to subsidise charging point electricity sales.

John R Ebdon @jrebdon.bsky.social · 27/11/2024
I am not surprised that electric cars are proving difficult to sell. My research tells me that the average price of a new EV is £28k compared with £22k for a small petrol car. Also, whereas an EV costs £18 - 24 per 100 miles to run using public chargers, a petrol car costs typically £17 in petrol.
