Jordan Rappaport @jrappaport27.bsky.social · 09/04/2025That I’ve been teaching for over 20 years, and in that experience teaching thousands of kids, more students with math anxiety have typical or high math ability. But let’s never question research or enter into healthy debates about it. 100
Jordan Rappaport @jrappaport27.bsky.social · 09/04/2025In my experience, that 77% is far greater. #iteachmath #mathsky #edusky 151
Jordan Rappaport @jrappaport27.bsky.social · 08/04/2025Welcome to the party :) Scenery is a little but different, but some definite familiarity of a time and place that once was :) 020
Jordan Rappaport @jrappaport27.bsky.social · 07/04/2025We scaffold learning so all students have an entry point into the learning. Our goal is for students to feel safe, included and confident. Once that’s established, we can push students think as they’re more willing step outside their comfort zones. #iteachmath #mathsky #edusky 062
Jordan Rappaport @jrappaport27.bsky.social · 03/04/2025Manipulatives as tools to support/model/extend thinking across K-12. Also, kids “can use them as toys” and then as teachers, we can scaffold in learning based on what kids are doing. 050
Jordan Rappaport @jrappaport27.bsky.social · 01/04/2025Get to spend the afternoon with a group of educators diving into the intentional use of manipulatives as tools for thinking across K-8, ensuring all students have access to to meaningful and rigorous mathematical experiences. #mathsky #iteachmath #edusky @corwinpress.bsky.social 073

Jordan Rappaport @jrappaport27.bsky.social · 09/01/20252/2 Plus, forcing kids to adapt to a curriculum instead developing a repertoire and drawing upon what we need when we need it is just good teaching. 000
Jordan Rappaport @jrappaport27.bsky.social · 09/01/20251/2 I’m not really referring to either. When districts mandate teachers use a particular curriculum and only that particular curriculum by default of the curriculum being static, it’s going to benefit some kids, but definitely won’t benefit all. 100
Jordan Rappaport @jrappaport27.bsky.social · 08/01/2025Language and oral storytelling is cultural and directly tied to how students might demonstrate understanding of concepts. How often do we see kids penalized and harmed for not demonstrating understanding according how the science or the curriculum says they should. ? 100
Jordan Rappaport @jrappaport27.bsky.social · 08/01/20253/3 Don’t get me wrong, direct instruction is a component of effective pedagogy. But we need to be very intentional with how/when/where/with who By not incorporating a variety of instruction and assessment techniques, we’ll support some, but what about everyone else? #iteachmath #mathsky #edusky 081
Jordan Rappaport @jrappaport27.bsky.social · 08/01/20252/3 Instruction driven by the “Science of _____” does not consider cultural and community ways of knowing and doing mathematics, and as a result, is particularly harmful for students who historically and currently experience the greatest marginalization in math spaces. #iteachmath #mathsky #edusky 241
Jordan Rappaport @jrappaport27.bsky.social · 08/01/20251/3 Seems very similar to the push here to a “Back to Basics” approach. Teaching math is not the same as teaching reading. Kids begin mathematizing their world as infants. While many kids are ready to before starting school, they’re not reading. #iteachmath #mathsky #eduskyhechingerreport.orgNew Zealand has a problem with mathematics. Jordan Rappaport @jrappaport27.bsky.social · 02/01/2025This was shared with me, but I don’t know the source. I don’t believe in resolutions by virtue of setting a date to make a change. By reflecting on what’s behind me, while staying completely focused on what lies ahead - seen and unseen - these are commitments I can make. #iteachmath #mathsky #edusky 060
Jordan Rappaport @jrappaport27.bsky.social · 17/12/2024The example here, “my biggest takeaway from our time together” was the last activity I gave students before transitioning out of the classroom. Getting to be a part of someone, a families journey is the best part of being an educator. #mathsky #iteachmath #edusky 010
Jordan Rappaport @jrappaport27.bsky.social · 17/12/2024For me, that would be passionate, authentic and vulnerable. Then we get to a learning experience that brought us joy, because with everything around us, we need to be intentional and sit with the things that bring us the most joy. #mathsky #iteachmath #edusky 110
Jordan Rappaport @jrappaport27.bsky.social · 17/12/2024An activity I often lead in with is something I call “Learning for Joy”. We introduce ourselves and then share something about our identity. Most describe themselves using titles, though I encourage groups to use language that gets to the essence of their core identity. #mathsky #iteachmath #edusky 141
Jordan Rappaport @jrappaport27.bsky.social · 11/12/2024Saw a former student today who I taught when she was in 8th grade. She’s now 27 and an English teacher at the high school I went to as a student. Not sure if it’s a full circle thing, but either way, it’s definitely a trip. #mathsky #iteachmath #edusky 2140

Jordan Rappaport @jrappaport27.bsky.social · 28/11/2024If we launch with a visual with two open prompts, we are inviting all students into the conversation. If we can then move into a storytelling framework where we invite students in as partners in problem-posing, we support developing agency and efficacy amongst students. 000
Jordan Rappaport @jrappaport27.bsky.social · 26/11/2024Visited school today a high MLL (multilingual learner) population. Pairing oral instructions with visual supports as well as shape recognition in one’s first language are two strategies educators can use to support learners with accessing content and curriculum. #iteachmath #mathsky #edusky 1244
Jordan Rappaport @jrappaport27.bsky.social · 23/11/2024Here’s a novel idea, maybe try talking to kids in order to figure out what they know, can do. While we’re at it, maybe point out a few things they need to pay attention to, see what they can do and then provide feedback based on what they’re doing/not doing in relation to what the goal is 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️ 030
Jordan Rappaport @jrappaport27.bsky.social · 23/11/2024Which is why a space such as this is so important; educators sharing the work they do for no other reasons other than supporting one another and growing a field. Period. 040
Jordan Rappaport @jrappaport27.bsky.social · 23/11/2024It’s all a grift. Just follow the money trail, which inevitably leads you to one or both of publishing companies and/or politicians. 100
Jordan Rappaport @jrappaport27.bsky.social · 23/11/2024In Ontario, the word fidelity is used so the govt/policy makers can pat themselves on the back or demonized teachers. “Test scores are up because the curriculum was delivered with fidelity.” “Test scores are down because teachers didn’t deliver the curriculum with fidelity.” 030

Jordan Rappaport @jrappaport27.bsky.social · 20/11/2024Worked with a group of educators today to make some subtle shifts in practice, grounded in being the least helpful person in the room. We want more kids doing more of the thinking and for them to rely on each other for that. #iteachmath #mathsky #edusky 0150
Jordan Rappaport @jrappaport27.bsky.social · 20/11/2024Well played, I can appreciate that. As a lifelong Leafs fan, I’ve learned to not let my emotions get the best of me. 010

Jordan Rappaport @jrappaport27.bsky.social · 18/11/2024Being taught to avoid talking about politics has led to a lack of understanding about politics. Problem is people are challenged to separate their own politics when teaching about politics. So what needs to be emphasized is having a civil conversation about a challenging topic. 000
Jordan Rappaport @jrappaport27.bsky.social · 18/11/2024While this is some of the work I’m most passionate about, listening to myself is also pretty cringy. I mean, is that how I really sound 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️ 010
Jordan Rappaport @jrappaport27.bsky.social · 17/11/2024Want to add one more thing re: one of your previous that lines up nicely here, grades suck. They hinder are often the biggest barrier to learning. 100
Jordan Rappaport @jrappaport27.bsky.social · 17/11/2024Educators need to have a firm understanding of the previous and subsequent grades expectations/standards. What students learn and when is progressive, so understanding where learning/entry points in relation to the previous year can support with an instructional plan to address particular areas. 110
Jordan Rappaport @jrappaport27.bsky.social · 17/11/2024Ontario, and yes the entire province made the shift. 120
Jordan Rappaport @jrappaport27.bsky.social · 17/11/2024During class time. Removal from from class for targeted instruction should only occur after all in-class targeted supports have been exhausted, and families/caregivers have been partners in the decision-making process. 220
