"Good news" for fans of Lyotard's essay on philosophy after the death of the sun — the convergence of accelerating computation and a shorter than expected solar life span www.404media.co/our-solar-sy...

Our Solar System Is Terminally Unstable and Will Be Completely Destroyed, Study Finds
The estimated lifespan of the outer solar system has been downgraded from 100 billion years to just a few billion years, according to a study that probed “terminal instability” during the Sun’s death.

Cornell expelled students who were protesting genocide in Gaza, but made five of seven guys who gang raped a drugged girl for seven hours write essays. That tells you EVERYTHING you need to know about the morals of that institution.

Marx described commodity fetish as the imaginary of capital being more alive, having greater agency, and requiring more deference than the worker who produces it
For people who deny Al personhood for any Al model at any point in the future, you're going to need better arguments than this. There are arguments out there, but once agents can solve Navier-Stokes, write music and poetry, and provide people with seemingly fulfilling life advice, this kind of line is just not going to be persuasive. "YOU'RE CRAZY" no longer lands.

Thinking Al might be conscious is like thinking that there are real people talking to you from inside the
TV, or that there is a tiny band playing music inside the radio....

@Benthamsb...•1d
Why? Do you think it's insane to think Al might be conscious?

all i’m saying is, if I built a bunch of data centers on public land financed through loans secured against GPUs purchased from the same company who‘s investments financed those purchases, all in the name of scaling compute so that my product could do shit like this… they’d lock me up!

The University of Minnesota on Thursday announced $225 million in cuts over two years across all five of its campuses, starting with the 2027-2028 budget cycle. U officials just made cuts in June, with about 230 jobs planned to be cut then, some through layoffs and others through attrition.

University of Minnesota to cut $225 million from budget across all campuses
It comes after the U approved a budget in June raising students’ tuition by 3.8%, the sixth consecutive year of increases for the U.

a low profit rate and a hard shift toward upward redistribution, the related panicked turn toward neomarcantilism. Trump inhabits this world and sees several roll models for the strong leader ge wants to cosplay.

It can‘t be stressed enough that this is an intellectually debilitating way to think. Trump is not an exceptional figure. He is simply the embodiment of a series of long simmering crises: the breakdown of the rules based intl. order (itself long doomed)…

as many have pointed out before, no one complains about the difficulty of theoretical physics as if it were an affectation. difficult objects are difficult to write about and don’t render themselves into “common sense” figures. quarks no less than gender, subjectivity, aesthetics, etc.
