Blows my mind that in 2026 Parquet is not yet the absolute default for data sharing A few years back there was a lovely talk at @rohanalexander.bsky.social 's Toronto Data Workshop by some students who articulated one of my soapboxes far better than I ever have: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Evcn...

Yesterday, we released a new version of anvl: github.com/r-xla/anvl. You can use it to implement numerical algorithms in R and run it on CPU and GPU. The R Code is compiled, so you do not have interpreter overhead, and it also allows you to automatically compute gradients #rstats

Using a similar approach of using GeoParquet and the new ArcGIS ParquetLayer support from we're getting good performance with {arcgizviz}—though still not quite 4 seconds! 😅 GeoParquet and GeoArrow are the future 🚀 #rstats #rspatial

Alas we cannot know everyone’s use case. Best to support it than not at all imo. Nonetheless efficiency and performance benefits everyone regardless of size. Smaller machines can use bigger data

would _really_ love to see collaboration between rv, rig, and rpx. Each of these tools are trying to solve a similar problem, but in their own bespoke way.

Ideally, if I could have my cake without baking it (thank you for your work!!!) I’d like to see all of these tool developers approach R core with a proposal for a canonical way of representing project dependencies so—at minimum, the same file format could be used across the tools.

Then perhaps a follow up that can go over how we can improve CRAN mirror structures to have more robust version deps version history etc so that everyone can leverage the same structure.

ive found that when i start the project myself, implement the foundation and building blocks and have a good vision, thats when it works the best. other times ive found myself "vibe coding" for hours to only delete the thing after w my head bowed in shame
