My core job is teaching English but my TLR impacts every area of our school. I'm proud of the work in those areas and been lucky to lead a fabulous team. EAL improvement: Sept: 8% of school as Band A, new to English May: (inc 3 pupils that arrived in MARCH): 0.66% Band À And literacy! See image.

As a Labour voter working in education, I’ve wanted to write about the Schools Bill for a while. I’m worried about what it includes. But I’m even more worried about where it’s come from, and what it says about those making decisions in education. mrvallanceteach.wordpress.com/2025/05/17/w...

Posed this question on X but didn’t get much response. Am keen to hear why some might not yet be convinced by KR curricula. Please comment/share!

What an opportunity. Our school has 55% of children who have EAL, majority Spanish and Portuguese. An amazing opportunity to supercharge a culture which already has so many strengths.

I think a ‘house style’ of T&L is desirable (MwB routines, precise instruction, paired talk etc.), as is a common means of talking and thinking about teaching. But each subject must also be allowed to speak through its own language. The subject curriculum should guide subject pedagogy.

Agreed. We have a house style of 6 core strategies but each subject has a subject teacher guide that has been agreed by teachers of each subject. This is how teaching is done in the subject.

@alfdubs.bsky.social I’m a history teacher at a state school in West London. When we teach our year 10s about Britain’s migration story in the spring term, we teach them about you as one of our case studies! I wonder whether you might be interested in talking to our students in person or virtually?

School staff as interlocking teams driven by a common vision, but with distinct and individual modes of operation, and distinct and individual goals and targets. Each team is developed in its own right but all teams sit under a collective, school-wide identity and culture.

Not perfect, but posted these on X as I find the writing so interesting. See how the story surfaces in student work, how we get a sense of change, of ordinary lives affected by extraordinary events. Rich, narrative-driven texts helping to engage Y8 in their writing.

There are good days and bad days. Eureka moments and then sudden confusion. Small triumphs followed by big problems. Teaching, running a department, a year group, or even a school is really hard. Props to everyone who does it day in, day out. Our children are lucky!

This is precisely why I'm so proud of the work we've started with our Trinity Morning Reading Programme. Every child has an adult read to them 3x a week simply for the enjoyment of it. No quote explosions, no teaching of scansion, just reading in a communal setting.

We also place a big emphasis on learning for learning sake (every child takes Latin 2x a week in KS3, we offer classics at KS4-5). We're a turn around school, but we believe in the fundamentals of the trust.

I think there are lots of things about school turnaround that aren’t said. As a leader in these environments of course you need a clear vision, but you also need to be comfortable with high suspension rates, confident in HR processes, and prepared for parental/press/teacher pushback.
