Accelerating prepared students in middle school math has positive effects in high school and college, including closing gender gaps in core STEM majors (sci/math/engineering). Put differently, failure to provide acceleration exacerbates such gaps and generates lots of lost intellectual potential.

This is consistent with our recent work showing that stronger labor markets since the Great Recession's peak explain much of the large declines in community college enrollment. And that students on the margin between work and CC are unlikely to complete their degrees. www.nber.org/papers/w34498

We argue that this work speaks 1) Narrowly to prior lit on tutoring centers; 2) More broadly to prior lit on effective approaches to improving student achievement; 3) Most broadly to growing inequality in child development driven by unequal family investment.

Consistent with this divergence, chain entry widens within-district test score gaps, increasing the White-Black math gap by 0.037 SDs and the White-Hispanic gap by 0.020 SDs.

This overall effect masks substantial racial heterogeneity and is driven largely by White and Asian students. Math scores for White & Asian students rise by 0.040 SDs, while effects for Black, Hispanic, and Native American students are statistically indistinguishable from zero.

Joshua Goodman @joshua-goodman.com · 31/08/2026
Chain tutoring centers have a strong, positive, and persistent impact on student achievement. Following the opening of a district’s first chain center, overall math test scores rise by 0.029 SDs and reading scores by 0.016 SDs. These effects show no pre-trends, are robust to controls, etc.

Joshua Goodman @joshua-goodman.com · 31/08/2026
Tutoring usage is sharply stratified by income & race. Asian HHs are far more likely to use tutoring (3X the national rate). Nearly half of users come from those in the top 10% of income. Conditional on income, White, Black & Hispanic HHs have similar usage patterns while Asian HHs spend more.

Joshua Goodman @joshua-goodman.com · 31/08/2026
Chain tutoring centers have grown substantially since the late 1990s, expanding from roughly 500 locations in 1997 to a peak of over 4,000 by the mid-2010s. Math appears to dominate the business model, accounting for roughly 2/3 of usage (with reading representing the other 1/3).

🚨New working paper alert!🚨 Private tutoring chains like Kumon and Sylvan have grown rapidly. Who uses them? Do they improve kids' skills? BU econ PhD student Samuel Nitkin and I provide answers in: "Kumon Up: Private Tutoring Centers and Student Achievement" www.nber.org/papers/w35671 1/?
Private tutoring chains like Kumon and Sylvan have expanded rapidly in recent decades.
Combining data on business locations, household spending, and district test scores, we study who
uses these centers and how they affect academic skills. Nearly half of tutoring users are from the top
income decile, with Asian and White households five and two times as likely to purchase tutoring as
Black and Hispanic households. A staggered differences-in-differences design shows the opening
of a district's first chain center raises district-wide math and reading scores by 0.02-0.03 standard
deviations, at a much lower cost than public spending typically producing similar gains. Math
effects are largest for White and Asian students, so that center entry widens racial achievement
gaps, though less so in more racially integrated districts. These private investments help their
users, deepen educational inequality, and shape outcomes by which state accountability systems
and families judge schools.

Colleges and universities are deeply important to the US economy, and even moreso in Massachusetts. I'm quoted in this @bostonglobe.com article, perhaps being too optimistic. I'm hoping federal policy turns in the next 1-3 years from a headwind into a tailwind. www.bostonglobe.com/2026/08/18/b...

Here's an example of what you can explore. Middle school enrollments in Boston public schools are down about 16% relative to what pre-pandemic trends would have predicted. Asian-American enrollments in BPS are down over 20%.

I appreciate our district's superintendent noting there's no question high school math will involve different tracks, making the opposition to this in middle school harder to understand.

I'm quoted in this morning's @bostonglobe.com editorial about why middle school is likely the right age to begin tracking math classes. By middle grades, the range of math skills in a given cohort is too large to be taught effectively in a single class. www.bostonglobe.com/2026/08/03/o...

I'm in today's @bostonglobe.com explaining why Cambridge's middle school math de-tracking efforts have exacerbated learning inequality. Wealthier parents pay for math tutoring out of school, while those with less money are left with no in-school options. www.bostonglobe.com/2026/07/20/o...

COVID-era federal school funding may have had little impact on students, not because $ don't help, but because local govts reacted by reducing property taxes, leaving schools' overall funding levels unchanged. New @nber.org paper here: www.nber.org/papers/w35447
