🕷 Die Arachniden: . Nürnberg: In der C. H. Zeh'schen Buchhandlung, 1831-1848.. [Source]
Detailed historical illustration of a tarantula (Mygale erichsonii) from "Die Arachniden" (1831-1848). The image shows a large, hairy spider with a dark brown to black body and distinctive orange-brown hairs on its abdomen. The tarantula has eight long, segmented legs with thick bristles and lighter joints. Several smaller scientific sketches accompany the main figure, including close-ups of body parts and an egg sac with visible eggs. The drawing highlights anatomical details such as the spider’s eyes, leg segmentation, and hair texture in a naturalistic style typical of 19th-century arachnid studies.

Just found out there’s a pitcher plant (Nepenthes sp.) in Borneo that survives solely on nitrogen from treeshrew (Tuapia montana) poop. To ensure a steady supply, it evolved a specialised platform and offer sweet sap so the mammal can defecate perfectly at ease.

Should you fly through Newark? Many flights have been delayed at the busy hub because of radar outages, shortages of air traffic controllers and construction on a runway. Here's what to know.

Following up on my post from yesterday, here's who was still hanging out in the tree cavity after the female owl flew out. #wildlife #birds #owls
Two young Great Horned Owls, roughly 7-8 weeks of age, stand on the opening of a hollowed out tree cavity. They are both fluffy and just starting to have their feathers come in.

Good buddies of Nepenthes! Pitcher plants are not ruthless predators but friendly neighbors for a lot of other little creatures, offering them food, shelter and toilet; and their poops benefit the plant in return! Nepenthes related fauna are just so adorable 💚

Most pitcher plants trap insects. This one (Nepenthes hemsleyana) has tubular pitchers in which bats roost. The bats enjoy purpose-built accommodation in which to rear their young; their rent is paid in the form of droppings, which nourish the plant.
