Josh Goddard @joshgoddard98.bsky.social · 02/10/2026that's an interesting idea, hadn't thought about that! i shall have a look. I'd been considering Canada as an interesting too as the Liberals tend to be the governing party and do well amongst older voters (despite the underlying left/right relationship with age looking similar to the UK/Australia) 000 0
Josh Goddard @joshgoddard98.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Yeah tricky, I've been thinking about it too but can't think of a brilliant way of doing it 100 0
Josh Goddard @joshgoddard98.bsky.social · 02/10/2026that might be consistent with your observation from the BES? 000 0
Josh Goddard @joshgoddard98.bsky.social · 02/10/2026yes, absolutely - lots more to unpack. A thought I have had about another dimension is pro/anti-system, and the 'natural parties of government' being on the right in e.g. Britain but the left in e.g. Scandinavia, and this interacting with age (older voters being more inclined towards these parties) 200 0

Josh Goddard @joshgoddard98.bsky.social · 13/08/2026I think it's sneaky radical! Remember the domestic abuse storyline from a few years ago being v well done - and I'm someone whose spent their Sunday mornings throughout childhood listening under duress (you must not speak during the Archers on pain of death) 030 0
Josh Goddard @joshgoddard98.bsky.social · 07/08/2026Can't remember where, but read an interesting article on how leading, business-owning nonconformist families in Norwich moved across quite significantly to the Tories in the inter-war period - I suspect this didn't happen so dramatically in the west country 000 0
Josh Goddard @joshgoddard98.bsky.social · 07/08/2026Have often wondered this. East Anglia's generally a bit wealthier and the Anglican church a bit more embedded (vs the South West) so I've always assumed these help to explain why they shift more dramatically to the Tories in the 30s-60s (the crucial period) 110 0
Josh Goddard @joshgoddard98.bsky.social · 01/08/2026No but maybe thats just because they're performing better in by elections than national polls 010 0
Josh Goddard @joshgoddard98.bsky.social · 01/08/2026Farage dropping out is the (potentially gamechanging) event that puts this to the test, but I personally suspect a split right would remain as there's a significant far right vote not willing to vote Tory 210 0

Josh Goddard @joshgoddard98.bsky.social · 31/07/2026True, ofc challenges re governing, but revealing that they are able to win over other left bloc voters relatively easily (early days yes, but polling on propensity to vote etc also suggests this) whilst the 2(or 3?) right parties seem more fundamentally split - attitudinally, demographically 220 0
Josh Goddard @joshgoddard98.bsky.social · 31/07/2026Its interesting that their ineptitude over the past 2 yrs has disguised how transformations in British politics have left Labour in a stronger structural position than (ever?) before - a very split right (unlikely to unite imo), incredibly efficient tactical voting picture, etc 130 0

Josh Goddard @joshgoddard98.bsky.social · 16/07/2026true BUT we then stayed succesful for like 25 more years and won European honours on the back of it, and now they're in League 1. (Ultimatley I'm jealous cos I've never seen us be that good though, I'll admit it). Nevertheless lets give credit to Norwich for their success in this period, ah wait... 010 0
