IGA's Willyvanias are mediocre and shame Konami's pedigree of The Maze of Galious and The Goonies II.

My Castlevania hot take is that IGA and his lot from Tokyo fundamentally damaged the franchise in the long term and that Konami Kobe was the best thing to ever happen to it.

This pattern extends to games like Celceta, where they ignored the original Ys IV scenario draft (also by Hayakawa, ironically enough) and replaced it with embarrassing nonsense. It's the exact reason I dread a Ys V remake: I really don't trust these people to do it properly.

You might think one thing has nothing to do with the other, but a mistranslation is, from its very root, a distortion of the author's intent—which is exactly what LoH4 Windows did. Even if called a secondary creation, the "original sin" of distorting that intent cannot be erased.

I'm not defending legitimately bad translations, but Takeiri and Kondo set the gold standard for script infidelity and revisionism. Scrapping an entire game's text to write vanity fanfic is on a whole different level than questionable localization liberties or mistranslations.

It's real rich to see Kiseki zealots whine about the "purity of the Japanese script" when these very writers showed zero respect for the original Legend of Heroes IV by tossing out Hayakawa's entire script like garbage in 2000 and bastardizing it with their own trite fanfiction.

Check out this interview! I tried my best to explain properly how the process of making a fantranslation works in a way that anyone can understand. Big thanks to @groggy.dog for running YsLink and interviewing me! If anyone has any further questions, feel free to ask!

NEW on the YsLink blog: I sat down with @kaisaan.bsky.social to chat about the unique difficulties of modding Ys III and Ys V, and learned just a ton more in the process. www.ys-link.net/blog/2026/09...

The PS1 version is a rather curious port (even if quite cheaply done), but it has some interesting features and welcome QoL changes, such as preventing healing if a character is at full HP. Do note that the physical level is bugged at 40, though, so that would need to be fixed...

If someone manages to hack the PS1 version of The Legend of Heroes IV, I'm willing to port my translation work to it. Of course, my main priority is getting the PC-98 version done, but the script is identical, aside from some manual descriptions and text from the back of the box.

One thing I've paid special attention to is using oceanic, passive terminology and metaphors to describe the gods, contrasted with fiery, active language for humanity when characters assert their will. This is crucial for conveying the story's duality/deterministic undercurrent.

There are a myriad of things I'd love to post about and discuss in detail regarding the original The Legend of Heroes IV, but I'm refraining from doing so to avoid dropping spoilers. I've also woven plenty of nifty literary devices and very deliberate choices into my translation.

Leave it to corporate drones to literally trash older games just to shill hijacked remakes or worse modern entries that distort and strip away what made the originals special, degrading and ruining the series to satisfy the creative vanity of people who think they know better.

Josep @josepmc.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
Everything from Fusion onward might as well be a different series altogether. It made painfully clear that NES Metroid to Super Metroid was a fluke and that Nintendo has no idea why people liked these games to begin with. Zero Mission is also horrible and just sucks as a remake.

The monsters around Phildin in the PS1 version are definitely weaker than in the PC-98 original. It's sort of understandable that GMF wanted to make it more manageable early on for less experienced players, but the harsh, funky balance of the original is part of the appeal, lol.

I don't care about views; it just annoys me that all this stuff isn't accessible. The issue lies in whether Falcom will go nuclear again, but given they left every other channel alone, it should be safe. I just don't want to put effort into something and see it gone in a flash without warning again.

It's all really cramped compared to the PC-98 version, but the controls and redone UI work quite well...

Ran into a weird bug during the Lucref Open Scenario that wasn't there before, so I'll play around with this port for the time being.

This matter has still not improved in 2026, by the way. Just look at Falcom Acoustics 3 out there with flattened peaks everywhere and a fake hi-res version that is literally just an upsampled 44 kHz CD master (well, and the album itself just being disgustingly cheap and bad).

Josep @josepmc.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
There would still be the problem of this dumb company having over 2 decades of albums with botched mastering, which is something I was slowly working to "fix"/improve for over a year. But neither them nor their lobotomized shills truly care about the integrity of their music, so.

Josep @josepmc.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
A lot of things I had up were actually self-curated rips that I personally recorded and mastered myself. This included things like the *only* accurate-sounding rip of The White Witch on Sega Saturn and Ys III with Nuked-MD, and I also had plans to redo the Taito PS2 Ys remakes.

It's clear this company has no interest in being transparent or properly keeping a good amount of their old catalogue available, so theoretically there shouldn't be any harm. But at the same time, my emotional tolerance is low and I don't want to bother with a pointless endeavor.

Basically, it would only cover games without OST albums, albums/tracks missing from digital platforms (e.g., MIDI Collections, old vocal arrangements, tracks pulled due to plagiarism), third-party ports with unique music/arrangements, self-made recordings, that sort of thing.

I had this thought weighing on my mind, but would people be okay/interested if I opened a new Falcom music channel that focused strictly on old, unreleased/unavailable music? I would actually like to hear everyone's thoughts on this, so please let me know what you think.

Still no reply, but that was to be expected. Falcom is just the inflexible type. They are just incredibly obtuse and narrow-minded.

Still waiting for a response from Falcom now that Obon is over. If anyone knows a more effective way to reach out to them or has direct contact with them, please let me know.
