This is the kind of (food) court reporting we need. I think it’s in the public interest that you follow this man all day, make note of lunch, dinner, snacks, any exercise, time on toilet etc.

I’m not far from Hawick, pronounced hoik, like oik. Scotland’s got plenty of places with peculiar pronunciations. It took me a while to be convinced that ‘Milngavie’ is pronounced ‘Mul-guy’

I think even peak Alan Partridge would find complaining for likes about sub-standard beverages at Auschwitz while at Auschwitz a bit too distasteful.

He’s put it in his Substack under the newspaper article as well

Ours is 15 and is much less lively and feisty than he was. Seems he now needs much more assurance - pawing for affection, on the sofa with us, and invariably lays between us when in bed. When the day comes I’ll console myself by knowing he was loved and cared for, and that’s the main thing imo.

This is a good example of how you need quite a lot of detail of how these systems *actually* work to understand what the risks are, and how over-indexing on sci-fi can lead you a bit astray on what the future looks like

Two birds with one stone. Supporting an excellent organisation committed to a noble cause, and a small 2 fingered salute to the idiots who presumably think desperate people should be left to drown. rnli.org

Morally they have ofc, and I hope politically too. A 200 yr old institution, funded (& often operated) by volunteers, the mission of which is to save human lives at sea. Attacked by people who presumably think desperate people should be left to drown. Talk about moral compasses needing a check.

Yes, we can all snigger, but at least Truss managed to cause a financial crisis in those 7 spellbinding weeks. What’s Burnham done? £2 bus fares. Do me a favour. Quality over quantity.

Every new prime minister gets to celebrate their 50th day in office by restoring Liz Truss's rightful title of 'UK's shortest serving prime minister'. Congrats, Andy Burnham.

A dizzying array of moving parts and interests, what ifs, what thens, for the UK Right, more than capably made understandable in this ever excellent value, high output Substack.

Trump, his apologists’ madman explanation, his bullying overseas, and ultimately his tiresome, mean-spirited predictability. Plenty of his antics to recall and quotable bits in here.

Risks were known, regime can’t be removed from air, angering ME allies, alienating international ones, strangling energy exports, econ fight with neighbour, draining own resources. Could see ‘some’ reasoning in Iraq. Can’t here. Trump is so utterly out of his depth on complex issues…what is his out?

I appreciate he’s good on politics, but dismantling the basis of the right’s latest philosophical ‘hot take’ is something I hope Sam will do more of. One of the blog’s best in quite some time, imo (& I’m usually more of a Team Lawrence subscriber)

Quite the film buff. Favourite films of all time which we might’ve missed? What did you think of A Field in England? Watched a few times & still can’t decide. And The Hill (1965)?- for me Lumet’s best; uniformly superb acting, no score, camera work, intensity, accents untamed. In my top 5.

Interesting (as always) and dispassionate piece on what both sides are targeting, the scale of the attacks, and what the Ukrainians are up against, almost daily. Just how long can Ukraine hold on with its lesser stock of munitions?

Quite. Not sure who was the driver behind the office, but Alley Cats could basically be a podcast of not very funny people talking crap - not seen anything by Gervais comparable to the office, but I’m quite sure he’ll brag about about his Netflix download numbers for Alley Cats.

The worth of boast worlds @josefka.bsky.social · 09/08/2026
Loved the office. Since then it’s been gradual decline. Gervais should make a series about someone who can produce ‘anything’ and it be a commercial success. Stewart Lee said ‘After Life’ is the worst thing ever created by a human being - he may have to update that.

Thanks for this (I knew there was something a bit too ‘romantic’ about Jacobsen’s book), and thanks for the link to Mauroni’s Substack - he pulls few punches in his criticism of Jacobsen’s latest. Kind of a shame AJ’s books sell plenty in print and perhaps a TV series & experts’ hardly see daylight

Great stuff in there. “This is the biggest event probably in the history of mankind.” The agricultural and industrial revolutions didn’t really lead to anything, and WW2 was a bit of a letdown given how hyped up it was.

Many parts of it are, and it has a calming effect on me, but beyond nature it doesn’t stack up well in terms of what London has to offer for things to do. I tend to travel away a lot, but it’s always nice to get home.

Each to their own. I like the occasional weekend there, but I’m usually happy to get back to Cumbria. I feel more at ease in European and Asian capitals, sometimes probably because I’m just visiting, but other times working. 🤷‍♂️

Not the place for me. Everything there to do, but I feel overwhelmed by how busy it is when I’m there and I get a general feeling of hostility (not sure why as I’ve been to quite a few big cities and felt at ease).

Process safety engineers do not consider dozens of flying bombs potentially hitting critical equipment when designing refineries. And there’s no obvious solution other than heavy air defences (Refineries don’t need hydrocrackers ofc, but it’s tricky producing jet fuel, distillates etc without them.)

The worth of boast worlds @josefka.bsky.social · 12/07/2026
…I hope the West is taking note of these swarm tactics when they think about investing in things like expensive air defence missiles. Is the West betting jammers will see the end of drone warfare for big targets, or something like direct energy weapons?
000
The worth of boast worlds @josefka.bsky.social · 12/07/2026
Good piece as usual Lawrence. Must be impressive drones to fly 2,000km+ then hit critical pieces of process infrastructure (crackers). Control rooms would also cause major issues (a refinery’s brain in terms of tech & personnel), but they’re often hardened, and it brings into Q targeting civilians..

The effort being put in to convince the world that CB - who describes himself as the 5,900yr old intergalactic space warrior leader of the Recyclons, and who challenged May, Johnson, Burnham & Khan - is ackshully ‘The Establishment™️’ is only matched by how funny it is that they’re actually doing it

From looking in my wardrobe I may have a few options.
Cashmere crew neck jumper and wool cardigan, both grey.Black Chelsea riders and black loafers (suede finish)Blue windbreaker/rain coat/outer layer, blue roll neck underneath. Not a comfortable coat to wear - feels functional and rigidBrown field (?) jacket. White shirt underneath. Could possibly be worn with brown 1/4 zip. Comfy coat, 20 yrs old - hardly worn.

@dieworkwear.bsky.social I like the sports jacket combo (& blue jacket/beige chinos). Long coat looks great but maybe for going out in. Like the loafers, & I do have a wax jacket, if a bit too warm at the moment. Working in Finland so should be able to find Nordic wool patterns for 1/4 zip.

David, you really should add a section to your blog on ambiguity in English (yes, I know you don’t have a blog on ambiguity in English, before you start!) Recommended starting point: I like the one that goes smtg like ‘dogs must be carried up elevator’

Only his self esteem, and I don’t think he clicked on or I might’ve got chinned, so maybe it didn’t do his career much damage, but I bumped into Mike Tyson in Dubai airport circa 2010. Flustered I said “hi Mike, you’re a big fan of mine”. He said ‘thanks, man’ and declined a photo with me.
