Calls to remove profiteering from children’s social care are growing. But if we’re serious about tackling profiteering, we need to ask: when a council pays for a child’s care, where does the money go? Children’s care should be about children, not profit.

Cracking down on profiteering
Following our focus on sector concerns at national efforts to curb the use of unregistered children’s care placements in last week’s edition, this week The MJ examines the challenge of removing profiteering from the care service. Paul Marinko reports.

It was great to visit Edinburgh Napier University today and meet some of the students benefiting from its partnership with Enterprise Mobility. We had an excellent discussion about the many ways they work together to help students develop the skills and experience they need to succeed.

Yes, and raise taxes in US to reduce its deficit and so bond yields. Business investment in AI is pushing growth. A shake-out of hyperscalers would also ease yields, but could be -ve elsewhere.

This seems like a good move. Lowering expectations ahead of the budget is good tactics. Allow time for the effect of recent rises in nhs (etc) spending to take effect. Wait for a spending review and don’t feed the narrative of crisis.

In the 1980s I saw massive unemployment, with schemes for youth jobs and long-term unemployed adults. Industrial decline, urban decline and north-south divide. The failure of monetarism and the beginnings of financial dominance. State assets sold to fund current spending.

I remember the 1970s. I graduated in 1978 without paying fees or borrowing for maintenance. Jobs came with full time contracts, union representation and decent pay. GPs could see you the same day. A&E didn’t have long waits. Councils built houses for people like us. Not the world my children know.

“Eurozone hit with bout of selling” Why do they say “selling” when there is just as much buying? If prices fall doesn’t that make buying more attractive? It makes sense only when there is forced selling (as there is in US markets, today). www.ft.com/content/e485...

My point is more the principle of the rule of law. Sweden signed in good faith. The fact that the EU has shown forbearance, even when Sweden met the criteria, is a poor precedent. The argument here implies acting in bad faith by talking on an obligation with no intention to fulfill it.

Jos Gallacher 🕊️ @jos.gallacher.be · 01/10/2026
As someone who believes in the rule of law, I think the Swedish position is untenable. Sweden has signed up to an international commitment to join the Euro; a commitment it has failed to honour. It would be wrong to sign a similar commitment with no intention of keeping it.

What is x divided by zero? It is not, as Micheal Gove said on C4 news, “infinity”.🤦‍♂️ x times infinity is infinity x times zero is zero so infinity times zero is zero, infinity or x. Which it’s why mathematics says x divided by zero is “undefined”.
