I like to park on this bit of road when I can, but squeezing between the monsters is a regular challenge. (Fortunately I have a skinny car.)

Whenever I hear the expression “wealth creators” I think of Adam Smith.
“The annual labour of every nation is the fund which originally supplies it with all the necessaries and conveniencies of life which it annually consumes, and which consist always either in the immediate produce of that labour, or in what is purchased with that produce from other nations.”

The #edbookfest is not quite over. Javier Cercas was both hugely entertaining and fascinating speaking about literature and his non-fiction novels.

The reckoning is fast approaching. Between 1991 and March 2025, the 16 privatised water monopolies raised a staggering £82bn in debt while simultaneously paying out £85bn in dividends to their shareholders, according to research by the FT.

How to end the cycle of mistrust between the Treasury and everybody else www.ft.com/content/4987...

The Treasury can count cash out of the departmental doors, but it then disperses through fragmented institutions - national and local, private and public, arm's-length agencies and charities - with little coordination or accountability, no ability to invest for the long term and scant evaluation.

This FT editorial is lazy. The cliches and second hand wisdom do not make for a coherent argument. People who write in cliches probably think in cliches. By the way, the City of London is not a sector.
‹ Home
Above all, the incoming government needs to develop a plan for growth that revives animal spirits in the private sector, rather than Burnham's push for a more interventionist state that harks back to the
pre-198os era. This means building on existing efforts to streamline planning rules, simplifying the tax system, and reducing red tape. The incoming prime minister's pledge to deliver "growth in all postcodes" should not distract from efforts to realise the full potential of other key growth sectors such as the City of London, technology and life sciences.

The causality runs the other way. Austerity led to a lower increases in GDP.
I have calculated the increase in GDP in the 15 years up to 2007 and the 15 years after 2009, that is before and after the financial crisis.*
Time period Increase in GDP
1992-2007 54%
2009-2024 26%

And, in their recent report the Tribune Group of MPs echoed the thought:

An economy should work first and foremost for those who earn their living through their labour rather than through rent-seeking. It should back entrepreneurs and businesses that invest, innovate, and take productive risks over the long term.

Jos Gallacher 🕊️ @jos.gallacher.be · 20/06/2026
The idea has caught on. The recent report from the Labour Growth Group of MPs said this:

The Diagnosis
• Britain has become an economy where position too often pays better than action and contribution. We call this the extraction economy: a settlement in which holding scarce assets, protected licences, legal leverage, regulatory position or the power to shape and navigate broken systems can pay better than working, building, investing, caring, competing or taking productive risk.

Do you remember when Ed Miliband talked about “predators and producers”? From today’s FT:

One executive said that business "has long memories" and would be nervous given Miliband's
"predators versus producers" economic slogans during his time as Labour leader in 2010-15. "He'd need to demonstrate early that he's changed his thinking or, at least, is far more amenable to the private sector than he once was."

“Space based computing”? Data centres in space generate as much heat as on Earth. In space there is nowhere for the heat to go. If they are solar powered then they need to be in the sun, just like the Sahara in daytime. What happened to all those physics grads who went into finance? #EconSky
