Endlessly depressing. After years of working in vacuums, I've only recently restarted sharing work (nothing I'm overly invested in, but still). The fact that I might consider not wanting to do that for something that I think might actually have legs sucks big time.

More weekly game trash. Originally started working on a small scale life sim-ish thing, got overwhelmed, and then decided I just wanted to shoot stuff. Feeling very very good about that decision. jonremedios.itch.io/gooey-bullet...

Another thing that resembles a game on the digital trash heap. Very out of my comfort zone, was a bit of a slog to work on, begging for audio... oh well! Probably should have stuck with my original idea about an alien trying to shower like a human jonremedios.itch.io/cmds

The only move now is to: - post purposefully bad fake games - pay click farms to boost engagement - make real games in secret - look at your sunken eyes in the mirror and say "what happened to you" - weep - publish real games for nobody to play

KO_OP: 🪐 Wishlist Young Suns on Steam! @ko-op.com · 10/09/2026
An important update from KO_OP.
With great sadness and respect, over the next few months KO_OP will be saying goodbye to 13 members of our team. This decision was made to ensure the survival of the studio, and we deeply regret its necessity and the negative impact on our colleagues’ lives.

KO_OP has been making games for nearly a decade and a half, and our project funding has primarily come from publishers and platform partners. The games funding landscape has changed radically over the last few years, and unlike previous project cycles, this time we have been unable to secure funding for new projects while developing our current engagements.

As with all our company's operational decisions, this one was made democratically, and was motivated by the survival of the studio rather than maximizing profits. Our members are regularly updated on our cash flow situation, and were made aware of this upcoming shortfall well in advance. Membership then appointed a group to plan for this eventuality, and ratified their recommendations. Team leads and our elected executives will also be impacted by these reductions. We believe this level of transparency and accountability ought to be a minimum requirement for all organizations.

Young Suns will be reaching new platforms, with new content and features. We're all tremendously proud of it, and hope it will find its audience. Our bylaws ensure that any profits from Young Suns will still be shared with impacted team members. Our goal now is to develop new game concepts and prototypes while continuing to support Young Suns. In the event that we secure funding in the coming months, our intent is to rehire as many of our colleagues as possible.

In the coming days we will be sharing a list of impacted workers in the hopes of helping them find new work. We thank you for your support.

Been making weekly games lately (see: digital trash) to get myself out of a rut in my personal work. Just finished my first #Godot game and I'm impressed! Still have a lot to learn, but not waiting 50 years to compile is a huge win in my books. jonremedios.itch.io/sleepy-janitor

I worked with the irrepressible @jonremedios.bsky.social @tylermakesgames.bsky.social @rainysector.bsky.social @bravemule.bsky.social to write a paper on why permadeath (and other forms of loss in games) appeals, and what we lose when we try to paper over it with metaprogression. Check it out!

The new reports from @polarisgamedesign.com went up today! I had the pleasure of attending this year and got to work with some pretty nifty people on a pretty nifty paper about loss and pain in video games. Fun stuff! polarisgamedesign.com/2025/embraci...

Embracing Player Pain: Designing for Permanent Loss
Loss and death are important, some would say essential, parts of the human experience. It's something that we all must, in time, come to accept in our lives. Why is it so hard to accept in our games?

Ah yes, we all must make a choice between: pathetic coward, horrible monster, or oblivious buffoon.

Important context! I think the allure of this mythological Clair Obscur team is in response to how publicly dysfunctional the game industry has been (i.e. layoffs) It's nice to imagine that great games can exist outside of a broken model, but trading one lie for another ain't helping anyone.

Came back to social media (literally yesterday) to search for a little spark of hope/joy in video games — oops!
