When the Trump administration started dismantling a $368 million ocean monitoring system earlier this year, scientists, fishermen and Congress fought back. On Saturday, a 238-foot ship set sail to reinstall the first batch of monitors in the waters of the Pacific.

After Outcry, Monitors the Trump Administration Tried to Scrap Return to Sea
Under pressure from Congress, a network of ocean monitors that provides vital data to meteorologists, climate scientists, oceanographers and the fishing industry is being restored.

Two qvevri unearthed at Mtskheta, Georgia's ancient capital, in June 1907. Clay jars like these were buried up to the neck so the wine could ferment and age at a steady cool temperature. Wine has been made in what is now Georgia for about 8,000 years.

Languedoc-Roussillon has lost over half its vineyards since 1974, from 435k to about 195k hectares, while Gironde (Bordeaux) changed far less, from 103k to 91.5k. California overtook Languedoc-Roussillon in 2012, but since 2018 all three regions have been shrinking, and the decline has accelerated.

Hopefully it will be way off the mark. But do we want to have a chance to run away, or be plugged into the Matrix?!? Machines=bad. Wine=good.

New Weather West post out this evening! I discuss the hyperactive East and Central Pacific hurricane season, as well as the upcoming heatwave across CA--and also why even a dry & warm autumn tells us essentially nothing about the El Niño winter to come.

This gives a bit more hope: "What I know from looking at financial statements is that the top quartile wineries are growing by about 11 percent and they're profitable," McMillan said. "Not everybody is in the same boat."

Per Colangelo, “If people stop drinking in your restaurant because your prices are prohibitive, then it’s a very short-sighted way to approach pricing.” This is not helping wine producers as we try to move the backed up inventory in warehouses.

"The biggest impact could come from the rising cost of trucking, he said, since a significant amount of the crop is sold on the East Coast." Diesel in California at $8.42 per gallon is not what all our local Lodi growers need right now.

Soaring diesel prices are hammering California farmers at exactly the wrong time
Diesel prices in California are setting new records daily. It’s terrible timing for farmers, who use the most fuel during the late summer and early fall.

One of my local Lodi winery clients had 10% of their total sales going to Canada. It is now zero. Canadians also contributed predictably to tasting room visits in the Lodi region. Those have dropped significantly. We need trade with Canada to be reopened to keep more wineries from closing.

A medium-sized wine grower & producer in the central valley, McManis Family Vineyards, decided to put their winery and vineyards up for sale partly because sales to Canada represented 40% of their total export sales. Their case sales to Canada dropped from 75,000 in July 2025 to 1,000 in July 2026.

From today we hear that exports to Canada represented 20% of total sales for Signorello in Napa Valley. Loss of these sales is partially responsible for their recent bankruptcy filing.

As a member of the California wine industry, I can attest that the disruption of open and free trade with Canada has significantly impacted wine sales to the point where it has influenced some wineries to cease operations.
