State of each position in 2026: What are the biggest tactical trends?
Elite soccer has changed dramatically in recent years, and the most valued player skill sets have evolved as a result.

Really enjoyed it - look forward to reading the book (when I’m out of toddler world and back to reading books, most likely!)

I think I miss it until 5 minutes in, when it becomes apparent that I really can’t recover from a sprint anymore, and whatever skill I had (not much) is fully gone

Right. But then, if there are no Jews working there (perfectly reasonably given population sizes) the process - make ad without noticing, immediately withdraw when notified - seems like the right one!

I’m not here for a fight, I promise. But if the animals are in fact being gassed to death, in chambers, I can see how an advert saying ‘next stop has chambers’, with a picture of an animal, didn’t immediately make some people think holocaust

So, really, the chance to be (possibly, possibly not) anti-semitic, to make a point that everyone already knows they support, has cost them any chance of being a serious party. Insufferably stupid.

Jonny Singer @jonnysinger.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
This is the crux for me. You can debate whether the motion is anti-semitic or not, I'm not hugely interested, it's a very tired debate. But they have ruined their chance to be a serious opposition. And they knew it.

For India, former Fulham, Portsmouth, everyone else, and Australia international winger Ryan Williams can clearly play. Thought Manvir Singh was also an absolute handful - gave Marquinhos a harder time than he looked like he wanted!

Brazil played at half pace, and looked dreadful defensively. Lucky not to concede, better teams would have beaten them easily. Estevao looked sharp, Bruno came on and captained as a proper 10, and Endrick ran around a bit. Gabi got 45 unremarkable minutes.

India were a lot better than I expected (albeit against a heavily rotated and not hugely enthusiastic Brazil team). Lost 4-0, but 3 of those were goalkeeping howlers. Switch keepers and it might have finished 1-1!

From Etihad's "RESPONSE TO CLAIMS RAISED ABOUT STATE-OWNED AIRLINES" filed with the US gov. in 2015. "The assertion that the Abu Dhabi government paid for Etihad’s sponsorship of English Premier League football club Manchester City is [...] false".
The assertion that the Abu Dhabi government paid for Etihad’s sponsorship of English Premier League football club Manchester City is equally false. In 2011, Etihad and Manchester City entered into a 10 year sponsorship agreement, which included naming rights for Manchester City’s stadium. Etihad funded this sponsorship from its own liquidity. It is not uncommon for airlines to have sponsorships with sports teams and their venues.

I know some Newcastle fans that stopped watching them over the ownership. Know of some United fans who have done the same. But I still find it unthinkable. We have so little control, but we commit so much of our souls! If I were a city fan I’d be heartbroken

Bang on. (Some) fans have acted like dicks, but being a fan means your club, to an extent, becomes your identity. Would be sickened if my club did something that made me need to stop supporting them

A £900m bombshell … and the rest
Morning. There’s only one place to begin this morning and that’s the Premier League releasing a statement on the Man City charges. It dropped late yesterday afternoon, and suffice to say it’s a bombshell. I’ve been on a flight all day, and can’t find an obvious answer - is it still 114/115, or is it all 115? If the former, what were they not guilty of? If the latter, is ornstein broken?

It's just so mad. Like, it feels so bad that it can't be incompetence. They can't have thought 'ah, it'll be fine', someone must have wanted to cause trouble

I don't disagree, but it's EXTREMELY hard to do that. I suspect they'll be incentivised rather than forced.

Jonny Singer @jonnysinger.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
I think that would be very difficult to square with the Everton decision. I wouldn't be hugely surprised to see a huge points deduction, mitigated down if ownership sells. So it's 'sell now and you're selling a PL club, or we'll make it so hard for you that your asset will be worth less'
110
Jonny Singer @jonnysinger.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
They therefore need to keep trying, because the 200-odd points are not paid off until they have won 200 points, but they can't just win the Championship and be back to normal in one year.
130
Jonny Singer @jonnysinger.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
My suggestion on this (and I don't know how possible it is, but I think it must be!) is that you deduct them x PL points, and say that, until they have won that many points, they can not go below 0. So, if they go down with -75 points, the next time they reach the PL they have a 75-point deduction

Jonny Singer @jonnysinger.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
More teams should do this. Lose 10% on ball security, gain like 3 huge plays a game!
000
Jonny Singer @jonnysinger.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
I think having a centralised 'we film all our games the same way' helps - even the CL doesn't really have that. And the sport is clearly well-suited with all the stoppages. But, yeah, he's just brilliant at it.
