The Tumblr "Johntest" bracket, which (weirdly) didn't actually feature John Malkovich

Nope. Jonathan Harker vs *me*. Jonny Sims. I actually beat the Archivist in the final by, like, half a percent.

Basically all of them. My brackets were apparently vs General John MacNamara, vs John Arbuckle, vs John Keating, vs Jean Valjean and vs Jonathan Harker

Apparently I've been voted "Tumblr's favourite John", which is equal parts flattering and baffling. Or is it perhaps a curse? Impossible to say.

I've seen people call my dad a nepotism hire, and I've got to refute this - I auditioned many, many my dads before casting my dad as Jurgen Leitner, and he was simply the best fit.

Oooh, lovely stuff! For some reason as I was typing it out I did have the thought "I bet Wangleberry would get a kick out of this", so glad I was correct!

I believe at the exact moment I could be learning how a Victorian failure to understand Buddhism could supercharge my bank account, I will instead by watching Jed the dog begin his ghoulish transformation into the Thing. And that's Ok.

There's a part of me that would genuinely like to go, if only out of morbid curiosity, but unfortunately I'm going to be watching Horror movies for 24-hours straight when it happens, so ah well.

But my absolute favourite, the one that absolutely floored me, is a talk titled "Amplify Your Wealth: Releasing Money Blocks Through The Akashic Records" THE AKASHIC FUCKING RECORDS ARE GONNA MAKE ME RICH. I can't handle it. Sometimes it feels like everything on earth is a Prosperity Gospel grift.

There's obviously the classics: the whitest person in the world listed as a "Shamanic Shadow Reader"; the one practising "Quantum Healing and Past Life Regression"; the "Miracle Molecule" of Shungite; oh, and apparently we have "Angelic" Reiki now - didn't realise they'd dropped the new DLC.

Frank picked me up a flyer for a local Hallowe'en festival of new-agey, spiritually, woo stuff and... Goodness, it is something else. The word salad of of self-help, motivational speaking and occult terminology is so unhinged and the obvious grift is so potent that it's genuinely delightful to me.

Hey now, y'all know me - I'm a bit of a private hater, but rarely a public dunker. I take a "whatever floats your boat" attitude and with a lot of esoteric stuff I'm of the opinion that we don't know what we don't know and what is "mundane" or "scientific" is always changing. BUT.

Also when designers learn a few academic terms then start relentlessly misapplying them. It's like, I promise you, nobody's GMing style is "maladaptive".

I love TTRPGs, but nothing makes me respect them less as a medium than reading discourse about them. Every time people starts subtweeting about some take, I'll get to the bottom of it and it'll be the stupidest thing I've ever read. Like, not ever worth discussing levels of stupid.

PAC's look always made me imagine an episode of Flight of the Concords where he played the former third member who got kicked out years back and returned to challenge them to a fight. They're overconfident cause he was always notoriously weedy, then PAC takes off his shirt.

I think that's the old Hoover building out in Ealing. Used to pass it on the bus all the time - one of the best surviving bits of Art Deco out there.

That's fair - I've not read the books so I'm basing it entirely off Guiness' mannerisms and how Ann is deployed in the TV series. I will say I don't think superintelligence would be required, though, as that sort of cover marriage was not uncommon at the time, especially for upper class gay men.

Jonny Sims @jonnysims.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
For me its the one between Guinness and Terrance Rigby in the park

Jonny Sims @jonnysims.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
Obviously that's not something that's within the text directly, but it's a very easy reading to make, and I think quite an interesting one.

Jonny Sims @jonnysims.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
So, his "failed marriage" to Ann is often deployed against him in a way that gives him the advantage of being dismissed or underestimated. And while not being without affection, if we take a reading of Smiley as a gay man, then it changes his marital situation from sad to extremely canny.

Jonny Sims @jonnysims.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
I'd also forgotten how gay it is, in ways that one is tempted to read as unintentional until you realise Le Carre was working for MI5/6 during the time of the Lavender Scare and it's inspired by the Cambridge 5. It knows what it's doing. (Also Smiley's marriage reads quite differently in that light)

I think there's a degree of cultural shift to it - Ian Richardson plays him as an old boys club "good sort" that I think doesn't read the same way now as it did in the 60s/70s among the almost exclusively posh Oxbridge secret services.

The ice-cold ruthlessness that Alec Guiness can suddenly put into his eyes behind the bumbling old man facade is legitimately breathtaking.

Also, people who complain about a movie or TV show going on too long after the main plot conflict has resolved are weak. Give me forty minutes of dealing with the emotional ramifications of the plot! Give me four separate scenes diving into the motivation of the antagonist! Yes!

Brutally precisent to. Love to have a 1970s TV play that explicitly states "We're in a battle for England's soul and here's what happens if we lose", then watch it 50 years later and go "Oh yeah. You were right and we lost that one big time."

Jonny Sims @jonnysims.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
Oh absolutely, I just know that the first time I watched it everyone had built it up as "folk horror" and I was so busy looking for the spooks I missed a lot of the really fascinating stuff it's doing.
130
Jonny Sims @jonnysims.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
I always think calling it folk horror is actually doing it a bit of disservice, both in terms of setting viewers up for a certain degree of disappointment (it isn't actually horror), but also it kinda of short changes Penda's Fen on how weird and interesting it is.
