My hope for this and next year is to get these series collected/recollected in some shape or form because that's where I've been slacking. Secrets & Shadows was never collected and I've been selling the old 2016 Alterna Clusterf@#ks because I still had so many copies. Want to fix that.
The cover to the Secrets & Shadows trade/graphic novel. It depicts Joseph Shaw and the other characters standing and facing the reader as the villain of the story looms over them. The logo is above his head. The cover for the Clusterf@#k graphic novel. It depicts the main characters (from left to right) Karl, Phoebe, Billy, and Jim standing in the center of the page and surrounded by approaching monsters, government agents, and vampire gangsters. Jim is screaming in frustration. The logo is above everyone's head with the credits underneath. Jon Parrish, Diego Toro, Kote Carvajal, Nic J Shaw, and Steven Forbes.

Something I realized was back when that Boy Wizard book was gaining popularity, I was also reading a book about a boy named Harry who discovered he was special and learning to use his abilities. How they looked at the cover and went 'yeah, this is fine for a middle schooler' is beyond me.

This is really cute but I'm also confused as to how it has -1 quote because I've never seen that before.
A screencap of the stats under the post. It reads 11 reposts, -1 quote, 58 likes, and 1 save. How do you get a negative quote?

Because I still see people who don't know this: Seeing [BLOCKED] to a quoted post does not always mean that YOU blocked that person, it usually means that one of the people in the initial interaction blocked the other one. The reason you can't see it is because Bluesky deletes the interaction.

Comics are great because you can literally just make a comic at any time. It can be fun to realize what you can actually do instead of focusing on what you can't do. #makeaterriblecomicday2026 #makeaterriblecomicday
A four panel comic.

Panel 1: A circle is talking to a square.

Circle: It's make a terrible comic day but I can't draw people.

Square: My guy, you can literally just draw people as shapes. You can draw them as squiggles. No one is expecting you to be Davinci.

Panel 2: The Circle and square are now the letter A and B.

B: We can be numbers or letters or punctuation marks.

Panel 3: They are now RPG Maker sprites. Circle is a brown haired man with a headband and a leather jacket. Square is a white haired woman with an eyepatch.

Woman: You can even make sprites in RPGMaker games if you need to have people.

Panel 4: A panel that reads 'your only limitation is your imagination' and in the bottom corner 'I made this in MS paint.'

It's Father's Day so here's a comic I wrote about my dad back in 2015 called Someday. Art by Kevin Bandt and lettered by Kel Nuttall. www.secretsandshadows.net/comic/someda...
[Page 1][4 Panels]

Panel 1: An establishing shot of Jon’s apartment at night. The building is comprised of two connected one-story flats with a rusted beige exterior and a dusty red tin roof. The flat on the left has two medium-sized windows as well as a front door close to the left of the house with a small window on the door, an overhead light, and a small cement step in front. Close to the center, there is a water pump and large blue gas tank. The flat on the right has a similar layout, but flipped to the reverse of the left flat. The light above the right door is on and the right door is open, but just a small bit. There is a small patch of grass growing around the gas tanks. In the foreground is a large gravel lot large enough to park four compact cars. There is a reference photo in the file.

NO TEXT

Panel 2: A side shot of the right door, now wide open, with Jon carrying his silver bike. He is wearing all black with a black backpack hanging off of his shoulder. In the background, we can see an open field of grass and the back of a small Japanese house with ceramic tiling on the roof. The light is shining down on Jon from above and behind so his face is shadowed.

NO TEXT

Panel 3: A medium shot of Jon standing with the bike on the gravel lot. He is checking the bike. In the background, we can see that the door is closed. He now has the backpack on correctly.

NO TEXT

Panel 4: A close-shot of Jon gripping the shoulder strap of his backpack, as if to make sure it doesn’t fall off, with a serious expression on his face.

NO TEXT
[Page 2][6 Panels]

Panel 1: A full shot of Big John in his early 30s wearing a black gi, the judge wearing a white gi, and his opponent. The judge is in the center holding both men’s wrists and is raising Big John’s hand. Big John has a smirk on his face.

BIG JOHN (op): He sat in the tree and waited for days. Or so the story goes.

Panel 2: Pull back to show that the previous panel is a photograph hanging on a light gray concrete block wall. Next to it, there is a portrait of Big John. In the portrait, he is shown as much older with streaks of dark gray in his hair and thick glasses. Below the pictures are a row of first place trophies on a shelf. Some of them have medals hanging from them.

BIG JOHN (op): His opponents thought he was late and decided to rest, but once they did…

Panel 3: A side shot of Jon in his teens wearing a white gi while sitting cross legged and facing the right, looking up at Big John in awe. Big John is wearing a white gi and sitting on the light gray radiator. Big John is looking down at Jon and punching his hand as if to show something being smashed. In the background and to the left of them, is a large wall mirror.

BIG JOHN: WHAM! Musashi jumped out of the tree, killed them all, and ran away.

JON: That’s insane.

Panel 4: A shot of Big John from Jon’s POV. He has a smile on his face and his arms crossed. He is shrugging his shoulders.

BIG JOHN (op) 1: Those were different times. I doubt there are samurai jumping out of trees today.

JON: Have you ever been to Japan?

BIG JOHN (op) 2: No, life always seems to get in the way.

Panel 5: A medium shot of Big John leaning forward putting his hand on his son’s head.

BIG JOHN 1: But I’ve always wanted to go. Just once.

JON: Maybe we can go together.

BIG JOHN 2: I doubt your mother would agree to that.

Panel 6: A close-up of Big John with a smile on his face.

BIG JOHN: But maybe one day.
[Page 3][5 Panels]

Panel 1: A full shot of Kuji City Hall late at night. It is a large white, three-story building with a small moon tower on the left side. There is a photo in the reference file. In front of it is a small, empty parking lot and a sidewalk. In the foreground and on the left, Jon is riding his bike towards the right side of the panel.

NO TEXT

Panel 2: A medium shot of Jon riding with a serious look on his face.

NO TEXT

Panel 3: A side shot of Jon, now riding on a sidewalk in front Amber Hall. There is a photo in the reference file. Jon is riding off to the right.
NO TEXT

Panel 4: A side close shot of Jon wiping his brow.

NO TEXT

Panel 5: A bird’s eye view of Jon riding on the sidewalk of a long bridge going over a large stream. The stream is man-made and has large cement walls on either side (about 30 ft. high), though the water is quite low.

[Page 4][5 Panels]

[Flashback/Black and white]

Panel 1: A medium shot of Jon standing in the room from Page 2. He’s slightly older and dressed in street clothes (t-shirt, jeans, and jacket) holding a cardboard box. He looks slightly saddened.

BIG JOHN (op): Well, this is the last of it.

Panel 2: Pull back to show Big John and Jon standing with cardboard boxes. They both look slightly saddened. The room is now empty. The trophy shelf and pictures are gone.

BIG JOHN 1: I guess kids aren’t that interested in real martial arts.

JON 1: Sorry, Dad. I’d give you the money, if I had any.

BIG JOHN 2: It’s all right, turkey.

Panel 3: A side shot of Big John and Jon walking toward the door with their boxes in hand.

BIG JOHN: Lever Bros. is putting me back on nights, so I would’ve had to stop, anyway.

JON: Well, maybe now you can plan for Japan.

Panel 4: A shot from the back wall of them standing in the open doorway.

BIG JOHN 1: Maybe, if you grandparents stay healthy.

BIG JOHN 2: But they’ve been… off lately.

JON: I’m sure they’ll be fine.

Panel 5: Angle on same. Big John has turned the lights out and now we can see him in the hallway holding the box. The light in the hallway is casting a long shadow across the floor.

BIG JOHN: Maybe you’re right.

I probably will never make a sprawling RPG with a complex narrative but I'm learning a lot either way. Also, these are fun to make and figure out how to work within RPG Maker's limitations.
A screenshot from RPG Maker of a mad scientist/wizard sitting on a throne in a run down room and addressing four other people. He is saying "Precisely! You must go out and procure my groceries so that I may stay here and avoid being perceived!"
There are bookshelves off to the side and a couple pillars for flavor. There are also a cat that you can just barely make out in the bottom left under his icon and a chicken that is not in the shot at all.A screenshot from RPG Maker of a rugged action star looking guy in a cell and looking through the bars while saying "My only window... is to a wall" which IS a reference to that one song which is also 23 years old. How does that make you feel?

I was wary when the Lucha Underground page did a weird A.I. (not Weird AL) trailer but the AI thumbnails for the episodes are not it. For the record, this is what Cisco and Castro actually look like. I don't know who those MMA guys are supposed to be.
An accurate picture of Cisco. Still wearing a bandana, but clearly a completely different person from the image. An actual image of Cortez Castro. A larger man with a shaved head and no visible tattoos. Again, looks nothing like the image in the thumbnail.

A screenshot of a thumbnail for the second episode of Lucha Underground. It has very inaccurate AI images of Prince Puma, Johnny Mundo, Cisco, and Cortez Castro. None of them look like actual person.

I've been thinking about this indie strategy RPG called Our Adventurer Party that I played a couple years ago. I really enjoyed it, but I remember many comments ragging on the art style and it annoyed me so much. I found the art really charming and genuine, even more now.
A shot of the Our Adventurer Guild main menu. I has the title and game options on the left. On the right, it shows an adventuring party standing on a grassy hill. There is a mage, a ranger, a paladin, and a ninja.A screenshot of one of the loading screens. It shows five adventurers in a forest. There is a girl in armor with a large sword, a mage in dark robes, a young man with a sword and shield, a young girl in leather armor with a red scarf, and a priest in light robes. At the bottom of the screen there is a loading bar at 22%. Above the bar is a tip that reads "Divine magic works differently on undead. Healing magic actually hurts them."

Just playing my comfort game. This playthrough, I've been chilling in the swamp where I grow hemp and turn it into fabric, fuel, and drugs while trying not to get killed by the cat-sized spiders that can one shot you before eating you alive.
A shot of my swamp base during the day. In Kenshi. There is a large wall around it and a large gate that is closed. There is a medium sized building with a smaller shack on either side. There is also some industrial equipment in front of the building. To the right of the entrance are three small cages.A shot of one of my characters, a robot named Voth, standing in front of a hydroponic hemp farm inside of one of the small shacks. It surrounded by torches.A shot of my starting character Weiss working at a machine to turn the hemp into fabric. Another character Gecko is standing in the background. Behind her is a machine that turns hemp into biofuel and to the right is a machine that turns hemp into drugs. There is also an electric torch in the background and two turrets.A shot of another character, Silvershade, standing on the roof of the main building at night with a light from the turret shining in his face. He is wearing a swamp ninja gas mask. Behind him is the drug making machine and biofuel storage.

Mega Centurions has been on my mind since the contract with Scout ends in June. If the pages look interesting to you, consider picking it up from the shop to bring the production costs down. That's where the money would go if you bought it from me directly would likely be going anyway.

The cover for the Secrets & Shadows Trade Paperback. It depicts the main character Joseph at the front with multiple other characters standing behind him. All of them are facing the reader while the book's villain, a man in black shadowy rags, looms overhead with a smile. The title is at the very top of the image.

Hard to say a favorite work but Someday might be the most personal. It's a true story about me and my dad. www.secretsandshadows.net/comic/someda... But there's a few other comics on the website including two series that I wrote, Secrets & Shadows and Clusterf@#k.
Panel 1: A full shot of Big John in his early 30s wearing a black gi, the judge wearing a white gi, and his opponent. The judge is in the center holding both men’s wrists and is raising Big John’s hand. Big John has a smirk on his face. The opponent has his free hand on his side and has a pained look on his face. They are standing on a dark wrestling mat and in the background we can see bleachers filled with people waving their arms.

Panel 2: Pull back to show that the previous panel is a photograph hanging on a light gray concrete block wall. Next to it, there is a portrait of Big John. In the portrait, he is shown as much older with streaks of dark gray in his hair and thick glasses. He is wearing a gray gi. Below the pictures are a row of first place trophies on a shelf. Some of them have medals hanging from them.

In the reflection, we can see the opposite wall with a stretch bar (similar to the ones ballet dancers use).

Panel 4: A shot of Big John helping Jon up.

Panel 5: A medium shot of Big John standing with his arm on Jon's shoulder.

Panel 6: A close up up Big John with a serious look on his face.

An example of what I found were the S&S pages that never came to be. The first page of issue #2 by Marco Roblin (issue #1 artist) and a page from issue #1 redrawn by Dexter Wee (the artist on issue 2-6/cover artist) when I briefly considered having issue 1 redrawn. I hadn't seen these in forever.
Secrets & Shadows #2 page by Marco Roblin.

Panel 1: A bar with some cars parked on the street in front of it.

Panel 2: The same bar is now exploding.

Panel 3: A man is inside the bar unconscious.

Panel 4: Another man is coming to his aid.

Panel 5: The two of them are standing together amidst the wreckage.Secrets & Shadows #1 page redraw by Dexter Wee.

Panel 1. Shows Black Sun standing over Marcus Caine and grabbing him by the collar.

Panel 2. Robert Hart is standing behind Black Sun and looking on. Black Sun is partially in the foreground.

Panel 3: A close up of Black Sun. He has a look of anger on his face and a tear streaming down his cheek.

Panel 4: A close up of Marcus smiling.

Panel 5: A close shot of Black Sun with a look of anger on his face. His eyes are glowing brightly.

Panel 6: A close-up of Marcus with a look of fear on his face.

Panel 7: An extreme close-up of Black Sun blasting his laser vision (heat vision? I can't remember) down at Marcus.

My website has always had at least one issue so this is the first time I've seen this in the decade plus that I've had my website. Only because I was like 'will this fix the last issue?' and it did.
A screenshot of the website health page. There is a green ring with the word "Good" next to it. There is a large smiling face that says "Great Job! Everything is running smoothly here."

While I'm proud of all of the stories I've written, I think Clusterf@#k feels the most me or at least who I was at the time it was being made. I could probably do some things better now writing wise, but it really is the one I would recommend. Hopefully, I can bring that energy to new stuff.

Made this last night but got sidetracked by accidental file deletion and recovery efforts. I just had to get it out of my head. It's only an intro but it proves my point.

Here's the notebook. It is indeed really cute.

A two panel comic.
Panel 1: Two poorly drawn circles are facing each other.
1: I hear it's make a terrible comic day.
2: Oh, how nice. We should make one.
Panel 2: The first circle is squinting and frowning. The second one also looks less happy.
1: Nah. Too much work. (The word "work" clips through the word balloon).
2: True.

For eight years or so, I've had my comic inventory in a corner of the dining room and talked about getting a shelf to put all the boxes of books up for at least a couple years. Took me way to long to do it but I did it.
A picture of a plastic shelf with several cardboard boxes of various sizes on each shelf. On the center shelf and in the center of the picture, there is a black digital scale on top of one of the boxes. There is one white USPS priority mail box on the center shelf as well. The rest of the boxes are the standard cardboard brown color.

ConTroll was another one-shot I made with the Clusterf@#k art team. I made a limited amount and haven't uploaded it anywhere but I probably should at some point.
ConTroll cover. It shows the convention security and three young kids in the foreground. Behind them, the troll looms posting on his phone while a superpowered man flies directly at him ready to strike.

Someday was a autobiographical one shot about my dad. It was surprisingly harder to write than when I made stuff up despite knowing everything that happened. Patreon (free): www.patreon.com/posts/63968140 Shop: jonhparrish.storenvy.com/collections/...

Mega Centurions was my second published series. I'm amazed that we were not only able to finish the book but that it came out as well as it did. Sadly, it will not be collected into a trade. Scout Webpage: www.scoutcomics.com/collections/... Shop: jonhparrish.storenvy.com

I learned a lot about writing comics, finding the creative team, and how comics are made in general putting together Secrets & Shadows. I still think it's fairly solid for a first outing. Globalcomix (free) globalcomix.com/c/secrets-sh... Shop: jonhparrish.storenvy.com

Last weekend, I got a new library card after talking about it way too long. It was nice to walk through the place and see books that I'm pretty sure I donated. I had planned on picking up the second novel in the Earthsea series but all the had was this massive compendium. This thing is huge!
A screenshot of the cover for The Books of Earthsea: The Complete Illustrated Edition by Ursula K. Le Guin and illustrated by Charles Vess. It depicts Sparrowhawk (I think) in a small boat being rocked by waves as a large red dragon flies overhead.

Him: Here is a hyper detailed painted image that I got from typing some words into my computer. Me: Here is a comic I made because it popped into my head while I was washing dishes and I spent way too long making it in MS Paint.
A four panel comic of a white circle and a white square against a black background.

Panel 1
Circle: My gf decided to dress up as a video game character to spice up the bedroom.
Square: Nice.

Panel 2
Circle: I thought so too until she spiderwalked in dressed like Voldo from Soul Calibur.
Square: Oh...

Panel 3
Square: I'm guessing that probably killed the mood.
Circle: No...

Panel 4
Circle: I... learned a lot about myself that night.
