It was a lovely evening at Milton CP, made even better by views of a Yellow-browed Warbler (found earlier by James Hutchison) - a great bird to make it 100 sp on the patch this year @cambsbirdclub.bsky.social

After what seems to have been a very poor autumn for them locally it was a surprise to see a Garganey at the Cambridge Research Park today - only my second patch record @cambsbirdclub.bsky.social

An enjoyable visit to Quy Fen yesterday to check out the newly discovered breeding population of Southern Emerald Damselflies (superbly found by Andrew Maddocks), as well as entertaining views of a noisy juvenile Cuckoo being fed by Reed Warblers @cambsbirdclub.bsky.social

Stourbridge Common in Cambridge is still attracting a nice assortment of Gulls, with 2 Mediterranean Gulls seen yesterday. Good to see that the one lingering around today is indeed different to the one on Sunday, with more white speckling on its head and a ring on the left leg.

Rival parent Terns seemed unimpressed with this juvenile's first flight attempts and were really giving it a hard time!

Last week's heatwave came too soon for the Milton CP Black-headed Gull chicks, which jumped off the raft before they were ready to fly. The Common Tern chicks seemed to be more resilient to the heat and this week were making their first practice flights @cambsbirdclub.bsky.social

Some birds from the weekend in Cambs: a very late Tundra Bean Goose at Fen Drayton Lakes, and the party of Dotterel near Gamlingay had grown to 13 birds - I think the largest group in the county for over 20 years @cambsbirdclub.bsky.social

After going missing for a week I thought the long-staying drake Scaup had finally moved on from Milton CP. However today it was back with the remaining handful of Tufted Ducks. I wonder where it had gone in between? @cambsbirdclub.bsky.social

Happy New Year! Some of the best birds seen and favourite pics from locally around Cambs this year. One of my highlights was recording over 100 species in April at my Tev Fen patch, though the habitat there and then interesting birds soon dried up @cambsbirdclub.bsky.social

Great day out in Norfolk yesterday. After a bit of a wait the Black-winged Kite started hunting at Ludham Bridge and quickly caught a vole. Later on the Eastern Black Redstart showed brilliantly in the winter sunshine at Sheringham @mrm27.bsky.social #ukbirding

Huge thanks to Chris Percival for her caring of the Manxie, and taking it to be released, plus the Manx Shearwater Rescue Group for their advice. Also credit to Caron Pattern and her dog Barney who found the bird in their garden.

It's been a lot of fun watching Swifts nesting in my boxes for the first time this year. The first pair fledged 2-3 young in July but surprisingly a second pair started late and have just fledged 1-2 young in the last few days. Fingers crossed they are back next year @cambsbirdclub.bsky.social

How many pairs do you have nesting there? It's difficult to tell how many there are close to me as most of the rooftops are out of view. This nest is a bit more sensible than the chimney one! Both should hatch in next few days

Lesser Black-backed Gulls have in recent years regularly nested on rooftops of a nearby industrial estate. Incredibly, this year a pair have decided to nest on a house chimney. It will be interesting to see how they get on @cambsbirdclub.bsky.social #ukbirding

Editing some of last year's photos on a cold February night. Probably my favourite bird of 2024 was this juv Osprey that spent 6 weeks at Milton CP. At times it showed incredibly well, allowing me to capture this sequence. Hopefully it is now wintering somewhere along the coast of Western Africa
