A special place. Many happy Saturday afternoons hanging around there with @dugster.bsky.social and walking back up Portabello Road, day-dreaming of Michael Moorcock and Hawkwind as we passed the Mountain Grill restaurant.

Sorry, not being clear. I meant, in that period. My Grandfather is second to end on this row, and would never have been able to afford a top hat and tails. I'm guessing that the canes were mostly hired too.

TBF there are very few people who would be prepared to fight for their country in western Europe (see 2015 stats below). I expect a lot of the far-right lads would be happier living in a Russian or American satellite state, so giving them guns probably wouldn't be a good idea anyway.
Map of Europe showing % of population who would fight for their country. 2015 data. Russia 59%, Ukraine 62%, Finland 74% Sweden 55%. Most of western Europe in 15-30% range.

Perhaps anti-intuitively, older people are generally happier. Over-65s are generally better on all scores than younger people. Retirement seems to be a turning point for many. If there were data for turbo-capitalism, I would expect a correlation. Source data here www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopula...
4 charts illustrates that different age groups rate their personal well-being in terms of life satisfaction, how worthwhile they feel, happiness and anxiety. Over-65s are generally better on all scores than younger people.

Finally, I toast some seeds and add them on top, together with any other seasonings (I'm a sucker for the Maggi Hot Liquid Seasoning and a little sesame oil). The photo shows the seeds on top, but it tastes much better when you've mixed them in! Obviously peanuts are more authentic. 6/6 🧵Ends

For this recipe I've also added bean sprouts. I chop the mint with a green chili, crush some garlic and add it to the bean sprouts and courgette with sugar, salt and a couple of glugs of white wine vinegar. Then it goes in the fridge (or not if I'm too hungry). For a main course I add noodles. 5/6

I grate the courgette and then squeeze out the water (with clean hands, obviously). The ones I've grown are quite dry at the moment because of the heat 🥵🔥4/6

🌱🍽️In the UK, it's courgette (zucchini) season. You can't plant them out much befor May because of frost, and if you leave it much later powdery mildew will get them. This year it's been hot early, so there's plenty! If you have a recipe please tag me in. 🧵1 of 6

I think that every time one of these MAGA/CPAC types does a Nazi salute, they should have to put their finger under their nose and do enormous goose steps when they get off the stage. If you're going to look like a pr*ck, at least get the details right.

There's another perspective. I'm not sure that the corporates of fascist Italy did so well in the end. The so-called 'economic miracle' of post-war growth was arguably a product of industry being literally leveled during the war, followed by reinvestment & redevelopment through the Marshall Plan.

Also from IFS ifs.org.uk/taxlab/taxla...
Shows UK VAT and sales taxes rising from around 2% of GDP in 1965 to approx. 5.5% now. UK is broadly comparable with EU14 and OECD, about 2% lower than Scandinavia but much higher than USA, which seems steady at approx. 2%

From ifs.org.uk/taxlab/taxla...
Shows UK income tax falling as a % of GDP from a peak of 14% in 1975 to around 8% more recently. UK is comparable with OECD, EU14 and US, but much lower than Scandinavia (still at around 14%).

Rhubarb from our allotment, made into crumble. 🍽️In the UK, rhubarb is the earliest fruit in spring. The 'cream' is from a well-known manufacturer of oat milk, which now makes the equivalent of single and double cream. They claim the double can be whipped. This experiment proves it!

Simple flatbread to accompany mid-morning coffee. Currants, strong white bread flour, pinch of salt and water. Pressed flat with fingertips and cooked on hot heavy small skillet. Sometimes I add sweet cinnamon or coarse ground black pepper, but today I kept it simple. The char adds a lot of flavour🍽️
