Will we ever break the association between Ireland and booze? From the head of the IMF: “thank you for inviting me to the land of Guinness. It has a special place in my own life. When the wind of perestroika blew into Bulgaria, my very first purchase in hard currency was a can of Guinness.”

In the space of 10 minutes, a black cab and then an Uber driver cancelled on me. I have ended up taking a slightly trickier tube ride. But not sure I understand why this is an option for a driver - it basically means you can’t rely on any booking, so why ever use one of the apps?

Europe’s iconoclasts didn’t just want to remove images they disapproved of, they wanted a permanent reminder that they disapproved of those images. This looks like a lot more work than just removing the sculpture.

This is a bit of a surprise - the eurozone economy has grown more rapidly than its US counterpart in the second quarter - 1.8% annualised versus 1.5%. As an energy importer, it was thought to be more vulnerable to the fallout from the U.S.-Iran conflict.

Today’s revision to fourth-quarter US growth means it is now estimated to have grown more slowly than did the eurozone in the same period (0.7% annualized versus 0.8%). Of course, it grew a lot faster in each of the middle two quarters, after lagging in the first. Messy year.

Really don’t understand why the OBR does this: “UK public sector debt as a share of GDP is nearly double the advanced-economy average.” It is if you use a simple rather than weighted average. The UK is not notably more indebted than the G7. It is more indebted than Estonia.

This may be obvious, but the trick to the BOE’s QT announcement seems to be that sales of long-term gilts are pretty much the same as last year (20% of £21 billion vs 33.3% of £13 billion) even as total sales rise. Some people might have wanted to see no further sales at the long end.
