I think the piece makes it clear that we are not 100 percent convinced but they look pretty convincing, especially after he said something very similar on Fox News! But we'll definitely update if the evidence tips against

this is a silly post but i think the actual story perfectly illustrates a HUGE issue with AI: users will always figure out ways to manipulate it to agree with whatever deranged worldview they happen to subscribe to

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

where it loses me is that there's no meaningful "artist" with a story or any other social positioning to the music
100
jon christian @jonchristian.net · 30/09/2026
i could MAYBE imagine future "artists" that are AI characters that listeners develop parasocial relationships with -- but even leaving aside whether that's a good or bad thing, i haven't seen any evidence of that happening so far
