One of my favorite things about my current podcast and website project is that sometimes I can reunite an outgoing letter with its chancery copy, after six centuries of separation. jonathanseyfried.net/historians-n... #medievalsky #medievalists @medievalists.bsky.social @la-coronica.bsky.social
The outgoing letter, dated May 28, 1387. Note the worm damage pattern that came from the document being stored folded up. I came up with an acronym that I hope will be useful for helping students to build AI literacy. SOUP: Symmetry, Opposite, Uncertainty, Peer review. See my post in Medium for the full explanation and an example. medium.com/p/using-ai-f...

Using AI for research? SOUP it up
Symmetry, Opposite, Uncertainty, Peer review — these are the key habits of mind for tackling confirmation bias.

The best historical artefacts are the accidental ones that freeze a moment in time forever. I thought I’d try to find all the times pets have ruined their owner's day and recorded that instant for all of history.

This single manuscript page has writing on it spanning over 1400 years. The base text is 6th century and there are notes from the 13th, 15th, 18th and 19th centuries. There are few objects that remained interactive for longer than medieval manuscripts. BNF Latin 2630, f1r

Christmas plays an important role in German tradition. Some cities even honor it by erecting bronze statues of Santa Claus.
A bronze statue of a man with a beard and a flowing hair. His hand is in his jacket. He knows who has been nice and who was not. He is here to seize the means of production.
