This report analyzes survey data from more than 160,000 respondents in 23 countries from 2017 to 2026, finding that the correlation between favorability of the U.S. and confidence in its president has increased significantly during Trump's second term. www.pewresearch.org/decoded/2026...

International views of the U.S. and its president are increasingly correlated
During Joe Biden’s presidency, as well as during Donald Trump’s first term, there was a much weaker relationship between views of the U.S. and confidence in its president.

In both 2017 and today, few South Koreans view Trump positively. But over that same period, views of the U.S. more generally have dropped roughly 30 points. South Korea isn't alone. People in many countries now evaluate the U.S. and its president as a “package,” rather than separately.

There's a pretty strong correlation between how people around the world view Trump and the U.S. But this hasn't always been the case. During Biden’s presidency, as well as during Trump’s first term, there was a much weaker relationship between views of the U.S. and confidence in its president.

Satisfaction with the way democracy is working didn't change much from last year in most of our surveyed countries. But there were four exceptions: In South Korea and Japan, satisfaction skyrocketed after a year filled with significant political change. In the U.S. and Australia, views worsened.
