Congestion pricing is "win-win-win" policy "with hardly any losers," says @pkrugman.bsky.social. "The only thing I think Trumpists would find unappealing about the congestion charge, if it had been their policy, is that it doesn’t seem to punish anyone."

I wrote a commentary in NF on regulatory responses to UPFs, rehearsing things I (and others) have been saying for some years - governments need to focus policy on companies as well as products - only higher level interventions will shape a healthier food system... www.nature.com/articles/s43...

Challenges for regulatory responses to ultra-processed foods - Nature Food
The emergence of ultra-processed foods is closely connected to the commercialization of food systems. Limiting their unrestrained growth may be critical to improving human and planetary health.

People want to protect children from junk food, but action at a local level is hard to implement & often hampered by industry. Local leaders can now create healthy places rather than treating obesity once it is there. ⬇️ Alice Wiseman, ADPH Vice President bit.ly/3W0irYr

This figure, borrowed from Public Health Scotland, is an interesting comparison of the alcohol-specific deaths situation in Scotland and England - looking at the ratio between the two. It highlights how big the gap was in the early 2000s, but also how it's fallen since Minimum Unit Pricing in 2018
A line chart showing the ratio of alcohol-specific deaths in Scotland to England from 2001-2023. In 2002, Scotland had more then 3 times as many deaths. This fell to just below double in 2012, then plateaued at that level until 2019, after the introduction of Minimum Unit Pricing in Scotland, when it began to fall again. Deaths are now around 50% higher in Scotland.

Today's OHID data shows the number of deaths caused by alcohol in England have now risen for *five years in a row* and are 40% higher than pre-pandemic. England hasn't had an alcohol strategy for over a decade. The case for action has never been stronger 👇 www.telegraph.co.uk/global-healt...
Trend chart showing rate of alcohol deaths in England per 100,000 between 2006 and 2023. Shows rise from 10.8 per 100,000 in 2019 to 15.0 per 100,000 in 2023. A rise of 39% (and an absolute increase in numbers of 42%).
