Squeezy John @johnspiers.co.uk · 29/09/2026I think a radical solution which bans cars in the city centre with excellent public transport links in while allowing those who live in the suburbs along the roads to use their cars locally is ideal. Botley Road was very pleasant with the rail bridge closed. The current solution isn't that. 060
Squeezy John @johnspiers.co.uk · 29/09/2026My family are from Oxford ... I remember stories from them from back when St. Aldates and Cornmarket were the A34 trunk road from Southampton to Manchester. Obviously that's from a time with far fewer vehicles, but Oxford has always had a massive traffic problem and I would like to see that solved. 120
Squeezy John @johnspiers.co.uk · 29/09/2026Absolutely ... I've lived here for 50 years ... I'm well aware of the geography and the problems of only 5 roads in to the city with no possibility of another because it's a small hill surrounded by floodplains and multiple river streams. I'm not the pro car person you seem to be arguing against. 220
Squeezy John @johnspiers.co.uk · 29/09/2026Interesting. Thank you! I’d love to know where all that traffic causing congestion on Abingdon Road southbound is coming from! Can it really all be exempt trade vehicles, buses, people using their passes and a few local residents? 111
Squeezy John @johnspiers.co.uk · 29/09/2026Because of that it shouldn’t also be asked to take almost all of the cars visiting central Oxford on top of that. You can’t just say it shouldn’t exist as a route to traffic. Almost everything built along it would be rendered unviable. I can’t take you seriously. 100
Squeezy John @johnspiers.co.uk · 29/09/2026Well, everyone’s entitled to their opinions, but at least now I know that you’re not up for a serious debate about this. The Botley Rd is the least ancient route in to town built as a causeway across the flood plains. It has houses, an industrial estate, a supermarket and multiple retail parks. 100
Squeezy John @johnspiers.co.uk · 29/09/2026Blimey! Andy Burnham is good at this isn’t he? That was an amazing speech. 1310
Squeezy John @johnspiers.co.uk · 29/09/2026I think it’s pretty clear that listening to Andy Burnham puts paid to the myth that everyone gets more right wing as they get older!!! 1160
Squeezy John @johnspiers.co.uk · 29/09/2026Not for the first time I think you’re deliberately misunderstanding what I’m writing about. 100
Squeezy John @johnspiers.co.uk · 29/09/2026The traffic for Seacourt park and ride doesn’t need to use the length of Botley Rd - that’s the point of it … it’s brilliant! However the 1600 CITY CENTRE car parking spaces now have to use the Botley Rd and it can’t cope with it. 010
Squeezy John @johnspiers.co.uk · 29/09/2026The US is no longer an ally of our country. Their governors regularly spread disinformation about us. America is a rogue state and a malign actor. 1143
Squeezy John @johnspiers.co.uk · 29/09/2026Great. Now do it for 3pm until 7pm when Botley Rd is trying to cope in the direction without the bus lanes. 200
Squeezy John @johnspiers.co.uk · 29/09/2026Great. So we get the traffic for 1600 car parking spaces and Abingdon Rd gets the traffic for 42. That seems fair!!! 100
Squeezy John @johnspiers.co.uk · 29/09/2026I can see all of these reasons if all the people designing it were dispassionately trying to dissuade cars from entering the city centre. But my complaint is that the result is that residents of the unfashionable part of Oxford have to have their lives disrupted by the hell created to achieve it. 000
Squeezy John @johnspiers.co.uk · 28/09/2026That’s a good idea. Although I’d do it the other way round to make better use of the Botley Rd bus lanes. 010
Squeezy John @johnspiers.co.uk · 28/09/2026There’s no parking for Hinksey Pool so nobody’s driving there! And Redbridge recycling centre is on the edge of town and nobody is using the Abingdon Rd to get there unless they live on Abingdon Rd now the filters are in place. 200
Squeezy John @johnspiers.co.uk · 28/09/2026I’ve just checked on a map and the distance from the Westgate car park to the A34 turning at Botley is 1.6 miles … the distance from Westgate to Redbridge is 1.5 miles. 100
Squeezy John @johnspiers.co.uk · 28/09/2026As I keep saying, Botley Road only has bus lanes in one direction. By moving the filter to where the ice rink is the traffic could be shared between two roads rather than dumped on just one. Your suggestion also has merit, but it’s clear the council doesn’t have the stomach for it. 300
Squeezy John @johnspiers.co.uk · 28/09/2026Botley Road has far more destinations though, the station and its car park, Osney mead trading estate, the multiple retail parks, Worcester street car park, Oxpens car park. Currently the only reason for driving up Abingdon Road if you didn’t live there would be to go to Hinksey Park! 200
Squeezy John @johnspiers.co.uk · 28/09/2026I think the answer to this might be to put the filter further along Oxpens Road such that Abingdon Road gets the Westgate traffic rather than Botley Road as the removal of through traffic has rendered it without any purpose other than residential. 100
Squeezy John @johnspiers.co.uk · 28/09/2026I don’t see what the difference is. When the A34 is blocked as it often is, the queues end up right down the Botley Road which is longer than the whole of Thames Street. 100
Squeezy John @johnspiers.co.uk · 28/09/2026There’s always one! Sometimes we have to use that and walk in to Wootton village from Besselsleigh when the 44 gets so fucked up that the “hourly” service begins giving up and just turns buses around. 110
Squeezy John @johnspiers.co.uk · 28/09/2026The straight ahead third lane is not 300m long, it holds 2, maybe 3 cars! 100
Squeezy John @johnspiers.co.uk · 28/09/2026Yes, but they both get used for traffic turning right meaning anyone who lives beyond has to queue behind them. Also it is not a left turn, it’s why the Botley Road was built! No bus services turn right there. 200
Squeezy John @johnspiers.co.uk · 28/09/2026Ironically this also makes using Seacourt Park and Ride a much more slow service and makes the more infrequent 44 local service totally unpredictable. There is no bus lane out of the city. 010
Squeezy John @johnspiers.co.uk · 28/09/2026You mean like the two right turn lanes to join the A34 at the end of Botley Road which always queue back to the centre of town making it impossible to go through to Cumnor Road? Well now all those extra cars from the Westgate car park are making it even worse. 200
Squeezy John @johnspiers.co.uk · 28/09/2026Well of course that’s going to improve! But it’s just been moved to Botley Road, Frideswide Square and Hollybush Row in the other direction. 100
